TDS / TCS payment – Points to remember

• Quote correct TAN, name & address on each challan
• Use same TAN consistently for all types of payment
• Use separate challans
   – to deposit tax deducted under each section
   – to deposit tax deducted for different types of
     deductees
• Indicate correct nature of payment
• Mention the correct A.Y.
• Verify CIN details uploaded by the banks to TIN
• Insist on computerised challan counterfoil from bank

•   SMS based
     – Send SMS to 575758
     – SMS to contain
         • the word CSI followed by space and CIN (BSR code, tender date, challan
           serial no.)
         • amount is optional
         • CIN and amount should be comma separated
     – Eg. CSI 0510001,11032009,5,5000
     – Status will display
         • TAN / PAN
         • Whether amount matched or not
         • Received in TIN (date)

     – SMS charges may vary from one service provider to another

      Preparation of e-TDS return
         – Points to remember
• Prepare return
   – as per the file format specified by ITD
• Using
   – NSDL RPU (latest version on the TIN website)
   – third party software
   – in house
• Use the same TAN to deposit tax and TDS / TCS return
• Quote the correct TAN, name & address of deductor
• Obtain & quote correct PAN of all the deductees
   – In 24Q, 95% mandatory deductee PAN
   – In 26Q & 27EQ, 85%mandatory deductee PAN
• Return can be filed only for deductee records having valid
  PAN
• Provide Salary details (Annexure 2) only for Quarter 4
  (Form 24Q)

• Mention the correct CIN as provided by the
  bank
• Challan amount should be same as that
  deposited in the bank
• Do not mention the challan form no. (i.e.
  ITNS 281) as challan serial no. in the
  statement
• Validate the statement through File Validation
  Utility (latest version on the TIN website)

• Submit TDS / TCS statement
  – to TIN-FC
     • .fvu file in CD / floppy
     • Physical Form 27A
  – Direct upload to NSDL
     • Register online at NSDL website

     • Online view of status of return

•   Status displayed on the basis of TAN &
    Provisional Receipt number.
•   Following details can be viewed:
    – Whether statement has been uploaded to TIN
      central system by TIN-FC
    – Status of statement at TIN (accepted / rejected)
    – Status of challan (booked / unmatched)
    – Number of deductees whose PAN accounts have
      been booked.
    – Line no. of deductees in statements whose PAN
      accounts could not be booked.
    – Confirm whether a specific PAN account has been
      booked.

 Annual Tax Statement (Form 26AS)

Form 26AS is a consolidated tax statement issued under Rule 31
AB of Income Tax Rules.

Form 26AS with respect to a financial year includes details of:

All tax deducted at source (TDS);

All tax collected at source (TCS); and

All advance tax/self assessment tax/regular assessment tax
/Fringe Benefit Tax etc., deposited in the bank by the taxpayers
(PAN holders).

           Benefits of Form 26AS

PAN holder can verify the following:
   •   TDS / TCS has been deposited to the Government account

   •   Deductor/collector has accurately filed the TDS/TCS
       statement giving details of the tax deducted/collected on the
       deductees behalf

   •   Bank has properly furnished the details of tax (e.g. Advance
       Tax, Self-assessment Tax etc.) directly deposited by the tax
       payer

 Non-individual/HUF:
 1. PAN Card in original with a copy
 2. Authority Letter
 3. PAN Card of Authorized Individual

  Status of registration available on NSDL website

  Three days after authorisation Form 26AS can be viewed online

     Inconsistencies – Common errors

• Challan details
   – BSR Code
   – Cheque tender date
   – Challan serial number
   – TAN
   – Amount
   – Do not split challans as per deductees

• Deductee details
   – Deductee serial numbers (for each challan, start from 1)

•   Credit does not belong to PAN holder
•   Deductor not taking corrective action
•   More than one entry for the same payment
•   Incorrect / incomplete credit
•   Credit not available

• Errors in challan by Bank or Taxpayer

   – Bank can rectify three types of errors:
      • Name of the deductor
      • Amount
      • Major Head code

   – For any other corrections, contact Assessing Officer
