1. Description of Factor-X / the Climate Consulting Group
Factor-X / the Climate Consulting Group is an independent company providing innovative consultancy
services and tailored products on climate strategies and carbon footprint to companies and public
All human activities generate, direct or indirect Greenhouse Gas (GhG) emissions, because relying on
fossil fuel use. On the World scale, the IPCC scientists recommend to cut these emissions by a factor 2
before 2050 to limit the global temperature increase less than 2°C. This ambitious target imply even
higher reductions in developed countries since about 1 billion people generate 50% of total emissions.
Every organisation – from services though to manufacturing - produces global warming gases as a by-
product of doing business, essentially because all-along their value chain, fossil fuels are used to
produces goods & services. Today, they‟re considered as waste or threat by most of companies. Some
already identified the evolution of their carbon emissions as a threat, as industrial, transport and
manufacturing sectors are strongly impacted by the depletion of fossil fuels and the price increases of
their raw materials.
However, a deeper analyse of the sources of these GhG emissions reveal substantial hidden profits,
resulting both from unnecessary high direct or indirect costs (Energy, material…) and from opportunities
to reorient the business to gain market shares and higher sales by brand enhancement, customer
engagement and addressing new markets.
Factor-X aim at natural capital productivity and consider waste and pollution as lost profits. That‟s why
we harness our energies to head for a closed-loop positive economy where every waste is turned into a
resource. We believe that all companies should start monitoring their GhG emissions on the broadest
possible scope to identify those opportunities for higher growth, expanded profits and reduced costs.
Our mission is to assist businesses shape new sustained competitive advantages. By focusing on
corporate environmental strategies, we find opportunities to cut costs, reduce risk, drive revenues, and
enhance intangible value in a fast-moving economy. We attempt to trigger a series of efficiencies and
synergies that enable both companies and their stakeholders to profit.
We help our customers to integrate the carbon indicator into their strategy, to transform threats into
opportunities and become leaders in innovation and profitability. We provide the resources to help our
customers to understand their carbon risk exposure, and work through a reduction, avoidance and
eventual offset programme to meet agreed commercial objectives. We develop innovative tools to
manage carbon emissions and original concepts to improve brand image. We are based in Belgium and
work with international companies and governments.
2. Carbon footprint and emissions calculations
Our Carbon footprint analyses are made following the „Bilan Carbone ‟ method developed by the
French administration of energy management and environment (ADEME : Agence de l‟Environnement
et de la Maîtrise de l‟Energie). In addition to the footprint itself, we offer strategies for managing and

reducing the carbon footprint by quantifying the impacts of several actions. The different actions are
monitored along three axes: environmental (Saved CO2-equivalent tons), financial (investment needed,
return on investment, profitability) and societal (social barriers, behavioural changes, etc) implications
are quantified and projected on a graph to facilitate decision-making processes.
The fact that our organisation has the licence of the 'Bilan Carbone' (carbon footprint) Method
developed by the French administration for environment and energy efficiency constitute one of our
Indeed, 'Bilan Carbone' is both a tool and a methodology for reporting Greenhouse gases emissions.
The main component of the tool is a ready-to-use Excel spreadsheet that calculates the emissions
caused by all the processes necessary for the existence of a given activity. Space heating,
combustion for manufacturing processes, freight shipments, passengers travel, production of raw
materials used, waste treatment...To take these items into account, simply fill in the spreadsheet with
energy consumption figures, kilometres travelled, quantities of materials purchased, etc. For each
source of CO2 or other greenhouse gases, these data are then converted by the spread sheet into
the amount of carbon emitted, using fully documented, public and official emission factors.
The great advantage of using such a tool to compute emissions and derive key performance indicators
are multiple :
Easy to use and to understand : input informations are straightforward and easily accessible
(billing systems, operations databases etc...). The systems converts quantities and £ into tons
of greenhouse gases.
100% automated : Templates are sent to third parties to fill-in their data, the validity of these
data is assessed by our team and filled into the system which transforms those into
Greenhouse gases and concatenates results into various outputs.
100% Flexible : The tool allows to work both in project mode to define a reference scenario as
well as in operations follow-up mode to assess the final emissions of the projects once realised.
100% reliable : The emission factors are fully documented into a 250 pages document
available from Internet at : http://www2.ademe.fr/servlet/KBaseShow?sort=-
100% compatible with all certification and reporting systems such as GhG protocol, ISO14064
Public and official : The method is supported and promoted by public and non-commercial
organisations, is yearly updated, and user guides are also available from the internet.
Thanks to the fact that this tool is available both in French and in English we are able to produce very
quickly a list of indicators and the lists of further information required to compute the latter, to be sent to
third-parties. Among the listing and the definition of the raw indicators for the measurement of the
carbon footprint of the games, we will also include graphical propositions for the presentation of these
indicators to the management board and third parties, both on the estimations of emissions and on the
achieved reductions with respect to the reference scenario.
2. Other services in sustainable development
Among the promotion of the carbon footprint, our company aims also to work on other area of
sustainable development such as Strategic planning, interim Management, trainings & conferences.
Even since Al Gore‟s picture, we think that many people remain to be informed and convinced about
the urgency to act to reduce the concentration of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Therefore, we
inform all stakeholders through conferences oriented towards the solutions to climate change and their

financial implications. We‟ve given 28 conferences so far: schools (7), communities (2), companies (4)
and associations (15).
We are a concerned company applying the “walk your talk” concept: we compute our own Climate
footprint, climate balance and try to reduce as much as possible the emissions generated by our
activities (no office, no paper, train and bike instead of plane and cars, etc…) and are committed to
neutralize the double of the remaining emissions in offset programs with top of the class carbon offset
companies. We plan to become EMAS certified during 2008
