Introduction and Methodology
Since the Spring of 2004, the Office of Institutional Research has continued to improve on the survey
instrument to systematically collect information from graduating students regarding their experiences here at
Florida A&M University. Questions in the survey were designed to help gather and inform the university’s
planning processes, Institutional Level Assessment Committee (ILAC), Institutional Effectiveness (IE), and
some other areas that can be linked to performance measures in regard to the University's strategic plan. In
this respect, the OIR will continue to refine and modify the instrument where and when necessary.
The survey was planned and administered through the coordinated efforts of the Office of Institutional
Research, the Registrar, and the University's Enterprise Information Technology (EIT). The participants
consisted of all students who had applied for graduation for the Summer 2007 semester. More than three
weeks before graduation, each student received an instruction letter from the University's Registrar's Office
instructing him/her regarding the necessary graduation requirements. Participating in Exist Survey has
become part of that requirements since the spring of 2007. Through the collaboration between OIR and EIT,
the survey instrument was posted on the University's website at least six weeks prior to graduation
commencement exercise. Of 585 students who graduated during the summer of 2007, a total of 452
completed the survey. This translated into a response rate of 77.26%. With a little changes in the process,
we hope to have a better response rate during the fall of 2007.
An Overview:
Surveys within the context of businesses and Industries, are strategic in nature. Because of this, these
businesses and industries have always conducted surveys in attempts to either gain competitive edge in
the market place, product improvement, gain insights into employees' job satisfaction, or for other
administrative decision making.
Surveys have always been conducted here at Florida A&M University. Most were purposive and useful
in nature, while a few could only be classified as a mere survey exercise since they had no bearings to
the institutional missions and/or visions. In recent years however, FAMU has started applying the
concept of Strategic Survey Research (SSR) in attempts to improve institutional programs,
instituinstitutional support services, initiatives, and other administrative decision making. A good
survey should always have direct and/or indirect bearings to the University's missions, visions, strategic
plannning, goals, and objectives. To me, that is what makes a survey useful and strategic in nature.
Within the context of the above reasons, I strongly urge the various committees such as the institutional
effectiveness committee (IE), Institutional Level Assessment Committee (ILAC) to closely examine
students' comments in the Appendix/Open-Ended sections of this survey (i.e. Questions 20, 23, and 26).
I believe by critically examining and analyzing these comments, we can all gain an insight into and an
understanding of our students' perceptions regarding some aspects of FAMU's
institutional/programatic problems and their possible solutions.
