SIEMENS COMPLETED GIS SUBSTATION CONTRACT WITH BEPZA
                                     Dhaka, Thursday, March 29, 2007
Siemens Bangladesh Limited has completed a contract worth of BDT. 133 million for Bangladesh
Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) at the Karnaphully Zone on Turnkey basis. The
Contract was to design, supply, install, testing and commissioning including all associated civil
construction works for a Substation with 2x20 MVA,33/11kV Power Transformer including 33 kV
and 11 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), which was successfully commissioned on 22nd March,
2007.
Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), is the official organ of the government of
Bangladesh to promote, attract and facilitate foreign investment in the Export Processing Zones
(EPZ). The primary objectives of an EPZ is to provide special areas where potential investors would
find congenial investment climate, free from cumbersome procedures, which are located at Dhaka,
Chittagong, Mongla, Inshwardi, Comilla, Nilphamari and Adamjee, Narayanganj.
The estates of EPZs are committed to the Investors with necessary infrastructure facilities such as
electricity, gas, water, sewerage, etc. for the Industries invested by the Foreign Investors, and the
100% export oriented Industries. For the efficient power distribution, BEPZA has gone for the GIS
technology keeping the view that GIS was neither a fantasy nor a luxury but rather a necessity, which
was well understood by the BEPZA that GIS :
 saves space due to its compact design, where space constraints is acute
 significant savings in operating costs as it is almost maintenance free
 pre-studied designs enable to reduce industrial cycle and makes entire project quality
controlled, reliable and ignites operation faster than any conventional systems
 safest technology while in commissioning and during operation of the substation thereafter
 Control-monitoring and protection have common man & machine interfaces which makes the
operation flexible e.g. automated and manual operation
 continuous trouble free operation for a long and longer period to its optimal utility
The captioned GIS substation project was strived and sold to BEPZA, EPZ, Karnaphully by Mr.
Asaduzzaman, Senior Manager, MV, PTD, and the Contracted Project was managed by Mr. Nurul
Islam, Senior Manager, PM, PTD, Siemens Bangladesh Ltd.
The Power Transmission & Distribution (PTD), Siemens Bangladesh Ltd., is continually striving for
the future prospects of the same at BEPZA along with the support of the entire family of Siemens.
This is worthwhile mentioning that PTD, Siemens Bangladesh Ltd., had executed similar kind of
project in 2005 with 1 x 20 MVA, 33/11 kV Power Transformer including associated 33 kV and 11
kV switchgear equipment and civil works for extension project of EPZ – Chittagong, of which the
contract value was BDT. 34 million.
The association between Siemens Bangladesh Ltd. and BEPZA has began since 1992 for supply of
MV substation equipment and to date with Turnkey solutions, progressing forward carrying the
vision and mission of Siemens, led by Ir. Hubertus Boesten, Director, PTD, Siemens Bangladesh
Ltd.
