I. USING THE COMPUTER LAB

            Rules For Use of Computer Lab

•The computer lab hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
•There will be no eating or drinking in the computer lab.
•You may not copy software; it is illegal. Unauthorized copying may harm the
entire University community and the entire institution may incur legal liability.
•You may not save your files onto the hard drive. They will be deleted! Bring
a formatted data diskette, zip disk, or CD-RW to save your work.
•Users are asked to exercise discretion when using the printers in the lab.
Excessive copying of documents to the printers will not be allowed.
•Users must not attempt to occupy more than one terminal and/or
microcomputer at a time.

              Powering On the Computer

•Gently press and release the top button on the computer (CPU); a
small green light will appear.
•Gently press and release the button located on the bottom, right-
hand side of the monitor and you will see a small green light.
•The Windows98 Logo window appears and then “Enter
Network Password” dialogue box appears. Leave the password
field blank and press the enter key or click on the OK option to
log in.

            Accessing the Faculty Programs

•Double-click on the icon named
Faculty and a window will open
displaying the School of Nursing
faculty and/or a course number, e.g.
NUR 626
•Double-click on the Faculty icon
you would like to use and follow the
instructions of the program.

             Accessing the Applications

•Double-click on the Applications
icon and a window will open
displaying the computer programs.
•Double-click on the program you
wish to use, such as Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Access, etc.

                   Accessing the Internet

All computers in this lab have internet access.
•Double-click on the “Internet Explorer” or “Netscape” icon.

               The Waverly Programs

•These programs will be assigned
to you by your professor.
•Double-click on the Waverly
folder; another window will open.
•Double-click on the program that
you wish to use.
•Follow the on-screen prompt.

               De’Medici Training Guide

•Double-click on the de’Medici
folder.
•Now double-click on the de’Medici
icon and follow the on-screen
prompts.

                       Nursing Boards

These programs are for graduating
seniors preparing to take their
State Boards.
•Double-click on the Nursing
Boards folder and another
window will appear.
•Choose the program you wish to
review and follow the on-screen
prompts.

                Shutting Down the Computer

•Click one on the Start button on the bottom
left-hand side of your screen.
•A window will appear with several options.
Chose Shut Down the Computer. Then click
YES.
•You will see a screen that says “Please wait
while Windows shuts down your system”, and
then the screen will go black.
•Please DO NOT touch the POWER ON
button again, this will only restart your
computer.

                            Laser Disk Systems

•Up to three students at a time may share each laser disk system using headphones.

•See lab assistant for a set of headphones.

•The student needs to let the lab assistant know which laser program they wish to
review and he/she will get it for them.

•After the student has finished with the laser disc, they are to return the laser disc and
the headphones to the lab assistant.

Note: There is only one laser disc system in the lab.
Please plan ahead if you will be needing to use it.

        How To Use The Laser Disk Systems
 • Mounted on the right side of the desk is a CPU; make sure that the Video Switch is pointing
 to Video Disc.
 • Push the Aqua Power Button to turn on the CPU.

• Turn on the Monitor by pushing the power button which is located on the
extreme right side of the monitor.
• Turn on the "Black Laser Disc Player by pushing the power button which is
located on the bottom row of the laser disc player, under the button that says LD
ROM.
• Push the Open/Close button on the Black Laser Disc Player to eject the tray so
that you can put in a laser disc.
•Take the laser disc out of the case and handle it gently by putting your thumb in the hole and grasping the
outer edges with the tips of your fingers (do not grab the playing area with your fingers).
• Push the Open/Close button again to close the laser tray.
• Double-click on the icon that says IVD Programs -- this will take you to the AMS Menu.
• You will see a list of programs -- select your program by using the arrow keys and press the enter key.

        How To Use The Laser Disk Systems
•Opening your program: The program begins with a video segment that will automatically repeat
itself or 'loop." Touch the screen or click the mouse to leave the opening and continue the program.

Login Screen: You will be asked to enter a first and last name for record-keeping purposes. You
will also be asked if this is the first time viewing the program. If you answer YES, the Introduction
to the program will be shown. If you answer NO, the program will proceed to the Main Menu.

•Introduction: The introduction is a brief overview of the program. After the introduction,
instructions for taking the programs will be given.

•Main Menu: The Main Menu is like the "main intersection" in that it can take the learner to other
places in the program.

•Course Map: The Course Map includes all of the sections and modules of the program including
those on the Main Menu, the Technique Lab Menu and the Clinic Menu. Choosing a selection from
the Course Map is usually the quickest way to reach a specific section.

•Reference: The reference section was information related to the program.

        How To Use The Laser Disk Systems
•Using the F10 Key to Move Around: Pressing the F10 key on the computer keyboard will give
you access to the Options Bar. The Options Bar is like a bridge from wherever you are in the
program to the selections labeled on its buttons: Main Menu, Reference, Course Map, Exit, and
Return. It is used to move to these areas in the program, or, by selecting Return, you can be
returned to the original location.
•How to Pause a Video Sequence: You may pause the video to take notes or pause for
discussion during a video sequence. When a "Pause" button appears on the lower right hand
corner of the screen, selecting it will activate this feature. When the video is paused, three
prompts will appear at the bottom of the screen:

           Replay: restarts the segment of video.
           Skip:   skips over that segment of video.
           Resume: continues playing the video from the point where it was paused.

•Exiting the Program: There are two ways to exit the program. The Main Menu has a
button marked "Exit" that may be selected. A second exit option is available by pressing
the F10 key on the keyboard and then selecting the "Exit" button on the Options Bar. an
opportunity to return to the program is given for those who choose this option by mistake.

IV. OBTAINING AND USING AN EMAIL
            ADDRESS

                      Obtaining An Email Account
                    Through the University of Miami Student Integrated System (UMSIS)


Complete the following two steps to obtain a U.M. student e-mail account. If you already have an e-mail
account, go directly to step 2.

  1. First, go to the web page for obtaining a User ID/E-Mail on UMSIS (https://umsis.miami.edu/sign-up/).
  You will be asked to supply a PIN so that you can reset your password in the event you forget it. Then you
  actually create your account from which you can send and receive e-mail. Once you complete the process, it
  will display your e-mail address. To avoid typos in Step 2 below, you can use the cursor to highlight the e-
  mail address and then "copy" this for a "paste" operation in Step 2. After you have obtained your UMSIS
  account you will be told to link to the Student EASY system or a web-based form to indicate your preferred
  e-mail address and other e-mail related information (step 2--see below for details).

  2. The second step is to enter/update your e-mail information, which can be done on the EASY System
  (http://easy.miami.edu). Enter your Student Identification Number and Birth Date and click "Submit".
  When asked for your current preferred e-mail address, either "paste" the UMSIS address that you copied
  earlier or type your e-mail address into the current preferred email address field on the EASY system. The
  EASY system will assign a "permanent e-mail address." If you have a UMSIS account, you will probably
  want your e-mail to go there while you are on campus, but if you are away for the summer break you may
  use EASY to reset your preferred e-mail address so your e-mail is delivered to another address.

You may access your student email
from any computer with internet
access. To do so:

• Open a web browser (i.e.: Internet
Explorer, Netscape, etc) and direct it to
http://www.umsis.miami.edu
• Log in with your username and
password at the “Log in to UMSIS”
screen on the upper left hand side of
that page.
