Education for Sustainable Living Project of the School for Curriculum Based Studies Faculty of Educational Sciences Introduction to the concept of Environmental management in schools • The school as an organisation provides a service to its learners. During the provision of this service, resources (gasoline, electricity, water, paper, etc.) are consumed which have an impact on the environment. • For example, during a science lesson, learners will make use chemicals (input) that will generate waste (outflow). This waste has the potential to have a negative impact on the environment. • The question now is how the school will manage the input and outflow of resources? • Schools, like all other organisations in South Africa, have the obligation to adhere to environmental legislation. • School managers therefore have the responsibility to manage the school in an environmentally responsible manner and to develop an Environmental Management System (an EMS) for the school. • An Environmental Management system create an opportunity for learners and teachers to participate in working towards a sustainable environment • In the next presentation Luiza de Souza is going to talk about the concept “environment” in the curriculum. • This will be followed by Dr CP van der Westhuizen that will show some examples of how a school can be managed in a sustainable way.
