Social Studies/Reading:
The Thirteen Colonies/Founding the Colonies 1607-1636 (unit)
Native Americans and New Settlers
The colonial era (1600 – 1850) was a period of critical importance in forming the
nation we have become. The attitudes toward personal liberty, freedom of
religion, and equal opportunity which gradually evolved have helped to form the
conscience of the nation throughout its history. The demands for political
equality, religious liberty, personal opportunity, and land ownership grew with the
nation and transformed it from a few colonies along the Atlantic coast to a nation
that stretched across the continent. The influx of immigrants from many lands
helped fuel a constantly changing economy. Although the colonial settlers retained
a foundation of British laws, language, and culture, they created a nation to meet
the challenges of a diverse population living in a rugged and dangerous new land.
