JOB TITLE: SUPERVISOR OF GROUNDS, FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND
BOTANICAL CENTER
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of General Services, coordinates
the operations, assigns duties, and supervises personnel in maintaining Water Works’
parks, grounds, and building facilities, as well as botanical, custodial and facility
maintenance issues at the Des Moines Botanical Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Supervises personnel in the Building Maintenance and Grounds Maintenance
Department in all facets of building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and
horticulture work. This includes hiring, training, assigning work, evaluating
performance, administering discipline, and terminating.
• Oversees the development and maintenance of Botanical Center collections.
• Directs daily operations of regional Botanical Center.
• Establish schedules for plant displays.
• Represents Des Moines Water Works in various community groups.
• Oversees the custodial cleaning contractors at the Botanical Center.
• Serves as a liaison for events held in the park and BC
• Writes grants for necessary funding for the Botanical Center, as well as Water Works
• Coordinates the planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers.
• With oversight by the Director of General Services, recognizes emergency
conditions and participates in emergency management/disaster recovery operations.
• Maintains records and prepares reports regarding work unit activities.
• Makes recommendations to purchase materials and equipment as needed to carry out
assignments or special projects.
• Prepares annual and ten-year capital budgets by compiling and reviewing historical
data, assessing needs, and projecting material, equipment, purchased services, and
labor expenses.
• Plans work unit activities, determines priorities and develops standard procedures to
ensure compliance with utility standards; assures adherence to all policies and safe
operating rules.
• Coordinates with organizations and individuals wishing to use grounds facilities for
special events or tours to determine their needs; makes arrangements to facilitate the
activity and explain rules.
• Schedules staff for on-call duty to provide snow removal or other related duties.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature.
• Works closely with City of Des Moines in administrating work load to accommodate
and fulfill 28E agreement on park and median maintenance.
• MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: 4 year Bachelors of Liberal Arts or Science Degree in commercial
horticulture, grounds maintenance, or related field.
Experience: Five years grounds maintenance and Horticulture experience and one year
of team leadership or supervisory experience. Additional experience may substitute for
required education.
Licenses/Certifications: Valid State of Iowa driver’s license. IDOT Work Zone Safety
Certification. State of Iowa Pesticide Applicators License.

EQUIPMENT
Demonstrates the proper operation and preventative maintenance needed for wide
variety of grounds maintenance equipment including but not limited to hydrostatic
turf, self propelled walk behind mower, push mower, weed trimmers, chainsaw,
utility vehicles, and brush chipper.
DESIRED: KNOWLEDGE OF HORTICULTURE
• Identification of a wide variety of plant material, including but not limited to
tropical, deciduous, conifer and herbaceous materials.
