Although one of the smaller Tanzanian parks in the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara NP is an
interesting place to visit. During the months of July through April, the lake waters are tinged pink
from the hundreds of flamingos who feed there. Other features of the park include its stable
heards of elephants and buffalos, enormous troops of baboons and its famous tree-climbing
lions.

The famous Serengeti encompasses nearly 15,000 sq.km and is unrivaled anywhere for its
seasonally shifting concentrations of herbivores. Nearly 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 gazelle
and 250,000 zebra complete a cyclical the ecosystem, followed by large predators.
Robanda is located just outside Ikoma gate, Serengeti. This area is right on the path of the
wildebeest migration, but has a high animal concentration year round. One will find many girafes
here, as well as big herds of elephants.

The unique Ngorongoro phenomenon must be seen to be believed. The crater, a collapsed
volcanic caldera, covers 250 sq.km and is 611m deep. Large numbers of carnivores,
herbivores, primates and birds are seen year round. It also boasts one of the last viable
populations of the nearly extinct black rhinoceros and the highest density of lions and spotted
hyena's.

Tarangire NP is one of the most beautiful protected aeas in northern Tanzania. It has the
highest concentration of wildlife during the dry season, and one can find a large concentration of
elephants year round. Tarangire is known for its river floodplains, wetlands, gently rolling hills,
rocky outcrops, acacia woodlands and numerous baobab trees. The park is also home to oryx,
greater and lesser kudu, lion, cheetah, generuk, wildebeest, zebra and more than 550 species
of birds.

Zanzibar: The very name Zanzibar conjures up exotic and romantic images. There are two
main islands making up Zanzibar : Unguja and Pemba. Zanzibar Town is on Unguja Island,
which is generally referred to as "Zanzibar".

A jewel in tranquil coral waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is one of the world's most
beautiful islands. From the shores the great European explorers Burton, Speke and Livingstone
set out on their voyages of
discovery into the hinterland.

The narrow streets of the old Stone Town are just some of the vived reminders of the island's
long and colourful history. It's a fascinating place to wander around and get lost in.

molten lava escaping. Take a look at some pictures of this volcano

African continent's most magnificient sights. Snow-capped and not yet extinct, at 5895m it is the
highest peak in Africa. From cultivated farmlands on the lower level, it rises through lush
rainforest onto alpine meadow and finally across a barren lunar landscape to the snow- and

Machame Route:

Price : Machame Routes 1080$ pp : Minmum 2pax, with only 1pax suppliment 200$ more
in the total costs:

day 1
Gate - Machame Camp (3000m); 18 km; 6-7 hours walk.
Trek to Machame Camp, through the dense mountain forest along a ridge, rising steadily with a
small opening in the trees known as Halfway Clearing, a good place for a rest. The gradient
relents as the forest merges into giant heather, and the path leads more easy to Machame
Camp. Cloud permitting, the
summit of Kibo is visible beyond the foothills.

day 2
Machame Camp - Shira Camp (3840m); 9 km; 4-5 hours walk.
From Machame Camp, follow the clear path up the steep rocky ridge, crossing and re-crossing
the crest a few times. You'll rest at Picnic Rock, where you can view the Shira Plateau. You
pass through clumps of grass and across patches of sand and ash. Then you reach Shira Cave.
Beyond the cave the path climbs over a small ridge, then drops across a stream before another
small rise up to Shira Camp.

day 3
Shira Camp - Barranco Camp (3950m); 11 km; 5-6 hours walk.
From Shira Camp, the path is clear as it climbs gradually in an easterly direction towards the
main peak of Kibo. The northern path passes Moyr Hut, the start of the northern circuit path
dropping sleeply down the side of the ridge to reach Barranco Camp.

day 4
Barranco Camp - Barafu Hut (4600m); 11 km; 4-6 hours walk.
Leave Barranco Camp and walk down up to the junction where you ascend up to the Barafu Hut
for camping.
If you took one extra acclimatization day, your walk today will start from Karanga Valley (4 km;
2-3 hours).

day 5
Barafu Hut - Uhuru Peak (5896m); 5 km; 6-7 hours walk.
Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp (3100m); 16 km; 6-7 hours walk.
The trek involves between 10-15 hrs of walking, which is made even more strenous by the
effects of altitude and extreme cold.
You start this day walking very early in the morning to see the sunrise at the crater rim and try to
avoid the mist. Sunrise is at about 6.00 am and it takes 5-6 hours to get from Barafu Hut to the
rim of Stella Point (5700m) plus another 1.5 hrs to Uhuru Peak.
The route from Barafu Hut joins the route from Gillman's Point, continue westward round the
Kibo rim to reach Uhuru Peak.

day 6
Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate (1500m); 11 km; 3-4 hours walk.
Descend steeply through forest on a narrow path along the crest on a broad ridge between two
river valleys down to Mweka gate.

You can add an extra acclimatization day : walk to Karanga Valley (6 km, 2-3 hours walk) and
rest in the afternoon for acclimatization. Overnight in Karanga Valley.

    personal expenses and tips

OPTION 4:
MT. MERU CLIMBING:
Mt. Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4566m (14,979 ft), although it is
overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, its famous neighbour, and frequently overlooked by trekkers. But
Meru is a spectacular classic volcanic cone, and well worth a visit. A trek to the summit involves
hiking through the grassland and lush forest on the mountain's beautiful lower slopes, followed
by a dramatic and exhilarating walk along the knife-edge rim of the horseshoe crater.

Meru was formed by volcanic action like most of the mountains in the region associated with the
creation of the Great Rift Valley. The circular wall of the crater was broken by subsequent
explosions to make today's horseshoe shape, and more recent volcanic activity has created the
ash cone that stands inside the crater. Small eruptions have been reported in the last 100 years,
indicating that Meru is still not quite extinct. The local Waarusha who live in the area regard the
mountain as sacred. Every year a bull or sheep is sacrificed and offered to the mountain to
ensure rain in the coming season. It is most likely that local people have been visiting the forest
and even the area on the crater floor for generations. It is not known whether anybody ever
reached the summit. The eposed nature of the effects of altitude would probably have deterred
causal curiosity.
MT MERU CLIMBING PROGRAM:

day 1:
Arrive and transfer to Arusha for BB at Jakaranda Hotel.

day 2
Momella gate to Mariakamba Hut : 1500m - 2514m (10 kms, 4-5 hrs)

overnight.

day 3
Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut : 2514m - 3570m (4 kms, 3-4 hrs)
Trek uphill slightly until it peters out into a path which climbs steeply up through pleasant glades
between the trees, to reach Buffalo Swamp and Elephant Ridge up to Saddle Hut. You can
sidetrack to Little Meru and Rhino Point, which takes 2 hours return for each.

day 4
Saddle Hut to Meru summit : 3570m - 4566m (5 kms, 4-5 hrs)
Return to Saddle Hut.
Leave Saddle Hut very early in the morning to reach the summit in time to see the sun rising
from behind Kilimanjaro, and to stand a chance of avoiding the late morning mist. continue
trekking to the summit; the views are spectacular. From the summit retrace the route round the
rim, back to Saddle Hut.

day 5
Saddle Hut to Momela gate : 3570m - 1500m (9 kms, 3-5 hrs)
