How RTL Televizija broadcasted Croatia’s top sports event
for an international audience and achieved the highest ratings
of any channel in the country’s history
The World Handball Championship 2009 has been the most important sports event in Croatian history.
It was superbly organized by the International and Croatian Handball Federations. As the leading
broadcaster in the territory, RTL has been fully committed to becoming the host-broadcaster for
worldwide distribution and covering the Championship at our channel RTL Televizija.
We were motivated by three strong factors: a top sports event taking place in Croatia, a world class
national handball team, and our goal to produce handball in the most advanced and sophisticated way
possible. This was both a challenge and an honor for us. I'd like to congratulate the handball team for
having become vice world champions and I'd like to thank our sponsors, clients and our team.

Over the last 6 months we developed and executed an extensive plan, with the participation of more
than 120 people in order to meet the highest broadcast and production standards.
Using unique studio formats, new and inventive broadcast elements like the spider camera, special
cameras at coaching benches, at goals, in dressing rooms, even in player’s buses and helicopters, RTL
truly had a vision which brought the viewers closer than ever before to the pitch and the national
team.
RTL Televizija made it possible for the World Handball Championship 2009 to become the most
successful sports event ever in Croatia! Even though the Croatian team didn’t win the gold medal, we
made a whole country World Champion.

Sport is big emotion, sport is big entertainment. This is why RTL’s programming goal during the World
Handball Championship had been to bring emotion into our viewers’ homes. We assembled a team of
first-class handball experts from four generations – Velimir Kljaić, Zlatko Saračević, Vlado Šola and Davor
Dominiković – who were all entrusted with the task of bringing handball closer to the viewers, using
their own perspectives as players or coaches – not only as a sport, but as a way of life and amusement.
Our hosts Ana Brdarić and Nino Štambuk were effectively in charge of the studio shows, guiding viewers
through numerous conversations, stories and six Croatian cities where the games took place. Wherever
there was handball present and wherever there were handball fans, our reporters were there!

While we were preparing the sales strategy for the World
Handball Championship, we knew that, being the biggest
sports event, the Championship would attract a high number
of interested clients, but the actual demand has shown that
our viewers enjoy handball above all expectations. With the

I’m thrilled with RTL’s crew. They’re really marvelous. I was present
at so many big tournaments, but I never even imagined the kind of
machinery that stands behind the broadcast of a single match. We
have learned from RTL Televizija’s professionals, and they have learned
from us. I’m grateful that RTL hired me for this project. Together we did
