PROTOCOL – FEBRUARY 2009

Intermediate Fungicides Winter Wheat Variety Trials

                              PROTOCOL 2008/09

This protocol was believed to comply with relevant agrochemical, environmental and other
regulations at the time of writing but it is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure that it
continues to comply. In the event of non-compliance the protocol should not be followed but
the Technical Manager should be notified at once of how the protocol requirements would
breach regulations.

Any deviation from this protocol other than under the circumstances described above may
result in a breach of contract and should be agreed in advance.

                                                                                    AHDB-HGCA

1.2 Introduction, trial distribution and varieties

The Intermediate Fungicide x Variety trial series is intended to show the performance of a selection
of winter wheat varieties under a reduced dose fungicide regime. The trials are to be grown at four
sites which giving a good geographic spread and a range of likely disease scenarios: RL fungicide
treated and untreated trials are also grown at the chosen sites.

All management and inputs (with the exception of fungicides) will be identical to the co-located
Recommended List trials, as will the data required from them if not otherwise specified in this
protocol. The trials should be sown close to the RL trials, on similar land and in the same field.

Intermediate Fungicide trial sites:

1.3 Trial design and treatments

The Technical Manager will generate trial layouts. They will be transferred to the appropriate trial
centres in electronic format as Excel workbooks. Instructions concerning the recording and transfer
of data will be issued separately.

Fungicide and PGR treatments are described below and in Appendix 1 and 2. These form part of
the trial contract and may constitute a breach of the contract if not adhered to.

The Intermediate fungicide trials will be treated with a modified (reduced dose) version standard
RL fungicide programme. The protocols for use until January 2009 are given in Appendix 1

                                                        4
                                                              HGCA Recommended List cereal trials
(standard protocol) and Appendix 2 (Intermediate protocol), after which revised versions will be
circulated for use.

The RL PGR protocol should be used.

The trials will have 3 replications.

Part 2 - The Trials

Refer to RL trial protocol. The protocol is the same as that for RL trials with the following
exceptions:

2.6.2 Timing of sowing

The trials should be sown on the same day as the RL treated trial.

2.6.4 Fungicides

See appendix 1. Fungicides should be applied on the same day as the treated RL trial and (as far as
possible) under the same conditions. The growth stage range (decimal key) of varieties in the trial
should be noted at the time of each application.

Trial managers should give a brief description of the weather conditions at the time of fungicide
application and the following 24 hour period - especially any rain falling during the period that
might affect the efficacy of the products applied. The trial diary sheet should be used for this.
Detailed weather records are not a protocol requirement.

2.7 Completion of records

As for RL protocol with the following exceptions:

2.7.5 Agronomic data recording

Agronomic characters:

STRAW LENGTH(cm)

Crop Record in trial number:

* Wheat trials: 104, 112, 123, 127. Note that the straw length of trial 112 (both treated and
untreated) must be recorded. An extra payment will be made for this
                         additional work.

Using a graduated rod the general height of the plot should be measured from one point in the plot
chosen at random (but avoiding abnormal areas). The measurement should be from ground level to
the top of the ear, ignoring awns.

2.7.6 Disease assessment

                                                   5
                                                                 HGCA Recommended List cereal trials

Disease assessment

Diseases to be assessed:

The trials manager has a duty of care to ensure that the disease present is the one recorded. If in any
doubt expert diagnosis should be obtained.

                               Winter
                               wheat

 Mildew +
 Yellow Rust +
 Brown Rust +
 *Septoria nodorum +
 *Septoria tritici +
 Fusarium ear blight +
 Green leaf area +
 Eyespot +
 Whiteheads % +

* Record S. nodorum and S.tritici if it is possible to do so. However, if this is difficult to do (i.e. in
mixed infections of S.nodorum and S.tritici):

either: if one species is clearly dominant (75% or more of lesions) record all symptoms as that
        species.
or: if the two species are approximately equal, record all symptoms as 'Septoria spp%'

Other diseases (e.g. eyespot, sharp eyespot, ear infection by Septoria nodorum) must be assessed if
there are clear varietal differences.

Timing of assessments:

The following disease recording protocol should be used for the co-located RL treated and
untreated trials, as well as the Intermediate Fungicide trials.

At or slightly Record foliar disease if moderate infections (around 5%) occur in any plot. If an early
before GS 31 optional spray is to be applied a score should be made before application.

GS 31-80 Record disease and green leaf area routinely three weeks after the application of the T0,
T1 and T2 fungicides and two weeks after the application at T3.

Assessment keys: Use RL assessment keys:

2.8 Trial samples and quality testing

1 kg grain quality samples may be required from the Intermediate Fungicide trials. If so, they will
also be required from the co-located RL untreated trial. The sampling of the RL treated trial will be
as normal. Full instructions will be sent prior to harvest.

                                                     6
                                                           HGCA Recommended List cereal trials

Dry matter assessment is as for RL trials but the same technique must be used for the co-located RL
trials as used for the Intermediate Fungicide trials.

2.9 Trial inspection

As for RL trials.

                                                            HGCA Recommended List cereal trials
