[...] World continues to be a useful and powerful analytic concept, however, because its problems are not only and primarily economic, much less geographic. 60 The new American militarism becomes a toxic concoction if it is mixed with 1 the natural and patriotic urge to safeguard the American way of life and the American standard of living with its high levels of materialism, consumerism, and profligate use of energy in the midst of dwindling resources and global warning; and/or 2 the missionary and Utopian zeal to spread American values, American democracy, and American markets as a bulwark against religious fanatics and terrorists and as a way of imposing advantageous global arrangements.
