CLASSROOM PHYSICAL DESIGN INFLUENCING STUDENT LEARNING AND EVALUATIONS OF COLLEGE INSTRUCTORS: A REVIEW OF LITERATURE

The physical design of classrooms, including studios, laboratories, auditoriums, and other indoor environments, can have a profound impact on student learning and subsequent overall ratings (student evaluations) of college instructors. Many college classrooms have been conventionally designed in the shape of a square or a rectangle, with permanently attached furniture, furnishings, and modern technologies. In order to facilitate student learning and subsequently to increase student evaluations of instruction, well-designed classrooms are essential for the purpose of individual, small group, and large group activities. This paper reviews previously published literature regarding how specific classroom physical attributes can impact student learning and subsequent student evaluations of college instructors.
