[...] piece, which was performed by six dance students and four elders, Barr interviewed each participant (and a group of elders who didn't perform onstage) and used their autobiographical information to inspire movement phrases. To fund the project, Barr got a grant from the MSU Provost's Office that provided production funds and covered other expenses, such as transcriptions of Barr's interviews and the cost of bringing the Burcham Hills residents to on-campus rehearsals and performances. (Barr's grant covered 18 months of work, and given the interviews and the complexities of planning for the elders' participation, that lengthy period was useful.) She also asked the students how they felt about working with elders and attending some rehearsals at Burcham Hills.
