Students use flip charts to build numbers using the ones place through
thousandths place. Students place their flip charts in order from least to
greatest.
Launch
Questioning: “Why do we need a decimal point to write this number?”
“What’s the point with the decimal point?” “How do you know that your
number is larger than hers?”
Give students base ten blocks and ask them to build their number two ways.
Give students blank decimal squares and have them color in their number
using all of the squares.
Explore
Questioning: “Can we color the decimal in just the thousandths square?”
Students color their decimal in the thousandths square using three colors to
represent tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
Questioning: “Which way did you like to build your decimal the best? Why?”
“How can you represent tenths on the thousandths chart? Why does that
