CHAMBER ACHIEVEMENTS
City of Enderby Creates Savings for Local Businesses
The City of Enderby, the Enderby and District Fire Department, and the Enderby and District
Chamber of Commerce have collaborated to streamline the business license and fire inspection
processes. The elimination of annual license renewals will reduce your business’ costs while
restoring local control to fire inspection services. Thanks go out to the City of Enderby for being
receptive to the needs and interests of the local business community.

March 27, 2009 Page 3 of 7
River Safety Signage Developed
At our last BC River’s Day, the Chamber had asked BC Hydro to consider sponsoring this
event. BC Hydro not only provided funding for the volunteers’ lunch but also $1000 for river
safety signage. Since then, we have consulted with numerous concerned citizens and river
stewards in order to identify the needs. With that information determined, we worked with local
sign manufacturer Empire Productions in order to produce ten signs. The production of the
signs has now been completed and we will be working with other community groups over the
next few months on the installation phase.

Website Launch
The Enderby & District Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the launch of its new
website. The website includes a user-friendly design, a business section which identifies all of
the benefits of Chamber membership, local information, a community calendar, and much more.
We now post all of our procurement and employment opportunities on our website as well. In
the next few days, we will be adding photo albums of Enderby and Area F natural attraction,
community events, and much more. Check it out at www.enderbychamber.com.

Making Policy Waves!
We have been very active on the policy front lately.

First, we submitted two draft policy documents to the BC Chamber of Commerce for
consideration.

 The first policy document was titled “Appropriate Care and Maintenance of Railway
Right-of-Ways” and addressed the issue of upkeep of railway land in populated areas,
including matters related to control of invasive plant species.

 The second policy document was titled “Creating a Responsive Mechanism to Protect
Communities’ Shared Use of River Waters” and addressed the need for a “single
window service” that was responsive to communities’ needs. Moreover, it also spoke
out against the amendments to the Navigable Waters Protection Act which will exclude
so-called “minor waters” and “minor works” from assessment, which threatens the
usability of public waterways for many groups, most notably recreational users.

Second, we have submitted several advocacy letters to our elected officials on behalf of
Chamber members.

 We sent a letter to Colin Mayes, M.P., with regard to proposed changes to the Interac
fee structure which, if accepted, will result in significant new expenses being passed on
       to consumers.

 We also sent a letter to George Abbott, MLA, with regard to the Growing Forward
initiative and the business and tax consulting services which private sector financial
       consultants provide to farm enterprises.

POLITICAL RADAR
Provincial Budget Figures
The Ministry of Finance for BC is projecting -0.9% growth in our province’s GDP for 2009, but
the good news is that it anticipates that our recession will be short-lived. For 2010, the ministry
projects 2.4% growth, increasing to 2.6% per year for 2011 through 2013.

Through reductions in spending, the provincial government will save 1.9 billion over the next
several years while introducing 14 billion in infrastructure investment. This investment
represents 3.4 billion in new spending, 2 billion for accelerated infrastructure spending and 1.4
billion in community grants for infrastructure. The remaining 10.6 billion represents existing
spending commitments in the provincial government’s capital plan. Budget 2009 claims that this
funding will create 88,000 new construction jobs. It anticipates that our province will run a deficit
over the next two years.

BC Legislative Watch
Environment Minister Barry Penner announced the release of the Western Climate Initiatives
2009 Workplan for the design of a program to reduce greenhouse gasses.

The Government of BC will be providing $186 million in grants to support community safety and
economic development.

Tourism, Culture, and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett announced an extra 15.1 million for artists
and arts and culture organizations across the province. He also announced another $6 million
to go to artists and cultural foundations. This funding is directed to museums, community arts
councils, and festival societies.
