History




          The best of two worlds
          Many German companies are inseparably linked with the names and achievements of
          their founders. For some of these companies, the founder’s name lives on: it is both part
          of the company’s name and a symbol and pledge in its own right. This is precisely the
          case at Wincor Nixdorf. The company’s story began with computer pioneer Heinz Nixdorf,
          and in addition, the reputation Wincor Nixdorf enjoys today can also be attributed to its
          many years as a member of the Siemens Group.

          Computer pioneer Heinz Nixdorf laid the foundation stone
          Heinz Nixdorf demonstrated his visionary thinking as early as 1952, when he laid the
          foundation stone for Nixdorf Computer AG. This was not simply because he foresaw the
          role that computers would play in the future but also because he was adept at turning this
          realization into useful practical applications. Creativity and innovation were not just
          theoretical concepts for Nixdorf; they were values borne out by his daily life. By the mid
          1980s, he had expanded his company into Europe’s fourth biggest computer enterprise,
          assuming a pioneering role in many areas of computing in the process.

          Integration in the Siemens organization
          In 1990 – four years after Nixdorf’s death – Nixdorf Computer AG was taken over by
          Siemens AG, and Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG came into being. The ‘Retail
          Systems’ and ‘Self-Service Products’ lines of business were integrated in the Siemens
          organization, creating the basis for future growth. With the name of a well-known,
          successful corporate group behind it, the company was able to win numerous new
          customers and projects.

         Expansion following restructuring and rationalization

         Following the restructuring and rationalization measures within Siemens Nixdorf
         Informationssysteme AG, which produced positive operating results between 1992 and
         1994, a first major wave of expansion came in 1995. The product and services portfolios
         were extended, internationalization given an additional push.
         This proved successful: in 1996 and 1997, the company experienced huge growth.
         Business units such as those for central retail solutions (Enterprise Solutions) and product
         solutions for lottery companies were set up.

         Retail and banking profile further enhanced
         An independent company – Siemens Nixdorf Retail and Banking Systems GmbH – was
         founded in 1998 and, as a fully-owned subsidiary of Siemens, was able to enhance its
         profile once again in the retail and banking businesses. Along with the production of
         devices and systems, software solution development for the two lines of business steadily
         gained importance.

         Wincor Nixdorf presence in over 90 countries
         Following its carve-out from Siemens and acquisition by equity investors Kohlberg Kravis
         Roberts and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners in October 1999, Wincor Nixdorf operated
         as an independent global enterprise. Today, Wincor Nixdorf has subsidiaries in 30
         countries and is represented by partners in over 60.

         Expanded IT services offering
         Since then, the banking and retailing portfolios have been extended to include IT services.
         This allows Wincor Nixdorf to act as full-service provider for its customers. Along with
         devices and systems (hardware), its offering includes software, consulting and a complete
         array of services – from device installation and maintenance to operation of entire ATM
         networks on a bank’s behalf.

         Successful IPO
         With the transformation of its parent company, Wincor Nixdorf Holding GmbH, into a
         public limited company, Wincor Nixdorf launched its initial public offering. Its stock has
         been traded in the Prime Standard on the Frankfurt stock exchange since May 19, 2004.

         Since demerger from Siemens of the operations that now belong to Wincor Nixdorf and
         the founding of an autonomous company, Wincor Nixdorf has advanced to become one of
         the world’s leading providers of hardware and software solutions and related services for
         the banking and retail sectors. Wincor Nixdorf has expanded its global presence and
         therefore reduced its dependence on the German market. In doing so, it has raised its
         market share above all in the European countries outside Germany. The company plans
         to go on pursuing this strategy and has set itself the goal of becoming No. 1 in the
         European banking sector and improving its already successful presence in international
         banking and retail. Another goal is to further improve the company’s sales revenue and
         profit lines, which it will achieve by the following steps:

         Maximum system availability is a major concern, in particular for banks. The key to it is
         quality. We have made the high quality of our products one of our primary unique selling
         points, and have also applied it to the services we provide.

         Efficient quality management is the prerequisite for reaching our high quality targets,
         adjusting flexibly to technology developments and adapting to changing market
         requirements.

         Workflows, interaction, planning and control of individual processes have all been defined

Banks: End-to-end offering for branch automation
         Wincor Nixdorf offers products, software and services for banks. The portfolio contains an
         entire range of automation and self-service solutions, and focuses on optimizing business
         processes and costs for the bank branch. The main areas of product activity cover
         automated teller machines, information/transaction terminals and statement printers and,
         in solutions, applications that electronically emulate and optimize key transactions in the
         branch business.

         Self-service systems support all branch functions
         Self-service systems support all the functions offered by the bank branch: from basic cash
         dispensing, statement printing, cash and check deposits, ticket dispensing, credit transfer
         transactions, loading prepaid phone cards, or dispensing rolled coins for business
         customers, all the way to cash recycling. Operating cash recycling systems means that
         cash can be made available again for withdrawal transactions once it has passed an
         authentication check. This keeps the need for costly, time-consuming replenishment
         processes at the self-service system to a minimum.

         Software platform geared to international market
         In the software sector, Wincor Nixdorf has developed a software platform that addresses
         the international market (ProClassic/Enterprise). It integrates and supports a bank’s
         different delivery channels, making it possible to incorporate Internet and telephone
         banking, for instance, in addition to the self-service channel. For example, the ‘Account
         information’ function only need be developed once and is then available to bank
         customers through all delivery channels – self-service, mobile or Internet banking. This

         From single POS to self-checkout terminal
         The hardware portfolio is based on the BEETLE POS system. The modular, scalable

         outlets.

         Tailor-made systems for service stations
         Wincor Nixdorf offers point-of-sale systems and tried and tested sales software for service

         in the sales systems along with typical industry services such as gasoline sales and car
         washes. The systems from Wincor Nixdorf have all the interfaces that are required to

         Migrating post office processes to self-service systems
         Some of the services that postal operators offer in their national branch networks
         correspond to those offered by bank branches and retail stores; at the same time, they
         are under high pressure to rationalize different branch types. Wincor Nixdorf offers to
         automate self-service-capable customer processes for postal providers and to migrate
         them from the current counter service onto self-service machines. It bases this offer on
