Plants are composed of the following constituent elements: * Alkaloids, the action of which is variable (and sometimes toxic), but from which we derive such important substances as caffeine, morphine, and nicotine. * Anthraquinones, substances that generally have a laxative and fateliminating effect upon the body. * Betulin, which has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. * Coumarins, which are a precursor of some anticoagulants. * Ericodine, which is a highly antiseptic and diuretic alkaloid. * Flavonoids, known for their antioxidant activity and effect on the blood vessels and circulatory level.
