Design Issues and Resolutions

Several issues were discovered and discussed during the design process. Below is a
list of the issues, tradeoffs considered, and conclusions.

Bandwidth to the Desktop
End to end throughput is usually limited by the slowest device

(computer/server/router/switch in terms of compute processing power), slowest
network links or the efficiency of the network protocols used. Determining the
appropriate amount of bandwidth is not easy without knowledge of actual network
traffic flows, network peak load times, and compute node utilization rates. Factors
considered by BHN consultants were: location of users, locations of servers, speed of
interconnections in between source and destination nodes, compute power of the
desktop, compute power of the servers, desktop network adapters, server network
adapters, processing power of the network equipment, routing and routed protocols
used, and the overhead of router to router and switch to switch communication
overhead. Conclusion is to provide 10BASE-T FDX network connectivity to Admin 1
and Remote Sales Office hosts (connectivity to servers via WAN) and 100BASE-T
host network connectivity to Building 2 hosts (largest user population/connectivity to
SOS is via LAN).


WAN bandwidth requirements
Determining the appropriate amount of bandwidth is based on a number of factors
and is usually based on cost/bit until the availability of empirical peak usage and
data traffic flow patterns become available. The number and expectations of users
competing for resources, type of applications (ex: real time vs. store and forward),
the physical location of user and network services (ex: local vs. remote) all impact
the networks ability of a network to handle traffic. Based on current market pricing
and the dual routed design approach of the XYZ network, terrestrial T1 circuit were
adopted. Additionally, each point to point connection was decided to be provided by
different carriers with circuits routed via different LECs (local exchange carrier
offices). Using different network providers will foster competition and provide the
needed leverage should billing and network quality of service occur.


VLSM Subnetting Considerations
The approach was to design for the largest network group (RDG) first, working down
to the smallest (WAN networks). Variable length subnet masking (VLSM) techniques
applied to conserve IP addresses. All networks will accommodate at 200% of current
staff plus reserving a dedicated switch port (at each switch) to accommodate local
network access for technical support personal. No networks use the first network
number except for switch B2F1SWA (building 2). In order to maintain efficient
allocation of IP addresses, IP address 223.0.0.208 is assigned to the reserved port
(B2F1SWA fa0/4 associated with VLAN 1). Refer to
CCNA3_CaseStudy_IPAddress_Worksheet “NAG” worksheet tab.


Switch selection of the Spanning Tree Root
The primary responsibility of the Spanning Tree Bridge (SRB) root is to block
redundant network paths to the same designation. In addition, the root is
responsible to distribute SRB timer values. Upon review, it is decided to
administratively assign the switch on the first floor (B2F1SWA) as the SRB root.
B2F1SWA supports the looped switch connection between switches and the single

switched connection to the router (SydneyB2R).


OSPF Designated Router Selection
OSPF is a good news bad news story. The good news is that OSPF offers the benefits
of using open standards, faster convergence times, and VLSM support. The bad
news is the benefits require extensive control of the routing updates between OSPF
enabled routers. This will not be an immediate concern; however, careful selection
of the DR is required to ensure network utilization efficiency and stability between
OSPF routers as the network grows. Designated Routers (DR) and Backup
Designated Routers (BDR) are elected for each multi-access network.
SydneyB1R was administratively elected as DR via the use of an IP Local Loopback
Address highest address assigned between routers).


What Is the Plan?

Proceed with the implementation phase of the Administration Building (Admin
Building 1), Sales, Marketing & Research Group (SMG/RDG Building 2), and the
Melbourne Remote Sales Office (RSO Building) locations based on XYZ Research
network requirement, conclusions reached on per design issue listed above, and
cost/equipment constraints. Below is the table listing the highlighting the network
deliverables by location.
