MAH and Horwarth Conducted the 2010 Hotel Operation Survey

Kuala Lumpur – Horwath HTL Asia Pacific, the world’s leading hospitality
consulting organisation today announced that they have successfully
conducted the 2010 Malaysian Survey of Hotel Operations, in co-operation
with the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH).

Numerous hotels from all over Malaysia including MAH member hotels
participated in the annual survey commissioned by Horwath HTL.

“We are pleased and honored to present the eighth edition of the Malaysian
Survey of Hotel Operations. This year, we are happy to have the support of
MAH. The backing by MAH underscores the fact that our annual survey is an
important and useful benchmarking source for the hotel industry, not just in
Malaysia, but also the region,” said Robert Hecker, Managing Director of
Horwath HTL.

The 2010 survey saw the participating properties are generally optimistic on
improving their occupancy levels with properties in KL and Kota Kinabalu
projecting 12 percent and 11 percent increase, respectively, whilst Penang
and Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Putrajaya and Bangi are projecting 10
percent increase. However, properties in Langkawi are forecasting a lower
increase of 3 percent.

The survey also showed the average occupancies of the top tier hotels
(hotels achieving average room rates above RM300) in Kuala Lumpur
recorded a year-to-June 2010 of 68 percent compared to 62 percent last
year, while the mid tier properties (hotels achieving average room rates
between RM200 and RM299) registered an increase of 8 percentage points
to 67 percent from the same period in 2009. The low tier properties (hotels
achieving average room rates below RM200 but above RM100) also
achieved an increase albeit a lower 2 percentage points to 69 percent.

“We are very glad with the response and participations by hotels throughout
the survey. The survey report is an authoritative and powerful analytical tool
for tracking industry performance and individual property benchmarking
against industry. I’m optimistic that the survey report is beneficial not only to
hospitality industry, but also to financial institutions and other interested
parties in Malaysia,” said Datuk Mohd Ilyas Zainol Abidin, President of MAH.

The Malaysian Hotel Survey 2010 joins similar annual hotel surveys conducted
by Horwath HTL and published with local industry organizations in China,
Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and New
Zealand. The annual ASEAN Hotel Study 2010 will also be prepared and
published before the end of the year.
