February 3, 2009 Vol. 14, No. 09 NASA selects observation teams to search for moon ice NASA News Update: NASA has selected four teams to observe the impact of the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, known as LCROSS, with the lunar surface during the mission's search for water ice on the moon. The LCROSS mission is a small companion mission to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral in spring 2009. Instruments aboard the satellite are designed to search for evidence of water ice on the moon as the spacecraft collides with a permanently shadowed crater near one of the moon's poles. The resulting debris plumes are expected to be visible from Earth with telescopes 10 to 12 inches in diameter or larger. On the night of the impacts, the LCROSS science team will be in constant contact with professional astronomers to provide live targeting information. This information is crucial to ensuring the astronomers point their large telescopes correctly to capture the exact moment of the impacts and the resulting debris plumes. ELV Update: NASA's NOAA-N Prime polar-orbiting weather satellite is enclosed in the Delta II payload fairing and is ready for launch tomorrow from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The preliminary weather outlook forecast conditions to be generally favorable for launch, but becoming less favorable the following day due to an approaching low pressure system. The battery conditioning on the OCO, or Orbiting Carbon Observatory, spacecraft began this week in preparation for launch Feb. 23 from Vandenberg. www.nasa.gov Three spacecraft in line for launch within one month well as your in-home tornado procedures. The KSC Tornado Safety Rules can be reviewed in the Safety and Health Guide, QA-UG-0001 Rev. B1, Page 35. PM Challenge 2009: Connect and Discover — NASA PM Challenge 2009 will be held Feb. 24-25 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The PM Challenge is the agency's sixth annual project management event, providing a platform for an examination of current trends in project management, and offers a forum for knowledge sharing, exchange of lessons learned, leadership development, team building, training and new ideas in the areas of program/project management, systems engineering, risk management, and related disciplines. Although there is no registration fee for the PM Challenge 2009, you must submit a SATERN training request to obtain your center approval to attend and complete the registration process on the PM Challenge Web site at: http://pmchallenge.gsfc.nasa.gov. Note that you are responsible for your own travel arrangements and cost, including hotel reservations. These expenses can be submitted for reimbursement on your travel voucher. Countdown is published every Tuesday and Thursday for NASA KSC employees. Deadlines are 9 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. E-mail news to anita.l.barrett@nasa.gov. For questions or information, e-mail, or call 867-2815. You can also find Countdown on the Web at: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/kennedy/news/ countdown/countdown_toc.html. Work also is under way to prepare the spacecraft to be mated to the payload attach fitting. The spacecraft will be encapsulated into the payload fairing beginning Saturday. The Kepler spacecraft was moved to a hazardous processing facility Monday for fueling which will last for most of the week. At Pad 17-B on CCAFS, routine work to prepare the Delta II rocket for the upcoming launch continues. Work is under way to prepare the second stage of the launch vehicle to receive Kepler. ODIN Tip: MS Office 2007 — Do you know what the “ribbon” is used for in MS Office 2007? The ribbon makes navigating in Office 2007 products much easier. ODIN soon will release Microsoft Office 2007 to all ODIN supported users. To learn more about Office 2007, please check out the ODIN Web site at: http://www.odin.lmit.com/ksc/kscoff07 08doc.html. Tornado Warning Drill at KSC — The National Weather Service in Melbourne and the Florida Division of Emergency Management will conduct a tornado warning drill from 10:10 to 10:30 a.m. local time tomorrow. The drill will be transmitted as a live tornado warning, transmitted via NOAA Weather Radio. Some local radio and TV stations and emergency management offices also may relay this warning in our area. In the event of adverse weather in our area, the drill will be postponed until Friday. Although no actions will be required by KSC employees, this is a good time to test your NOAA Weather Radio and review the Tornado Safety Rules at KSC as
