Exhibits: TD Technical Exhibit, Hardware from Shuttle and OSP Notes: Scale models of the X43 vehicles and an RS 84 engine and various Shuttle hardware pieces allowed visitors to see what space travel entails today and also future space travel. Educators and students from various universities throughout the nation, as well as Deputy Center Director Rex Geveden visited the exhibits and talked with staffers. Visitors of note included St. Louis rams cornerback Aenaes Williams, newswriter Tom Armstrong, and the owner of Blakewood Technology (Far Infrared research which is used for cardiovascular conditioning for astronauts). Victoria Langley and photographer, Capitol News Service, and Stacy White, Channel 27 interviewed exhibit staffer Brandon Boone. Several school groups around Tallahassee visited the exhibit. GULF COAST AIR SHOW, TYNDALL, FL ` March 27-28 2,950 Exhibits: Starship 2040 Notes: The exhibit included six new Timeline Kiosks and a DVD about the new Vision for Space Exploration. Kira Mathis, WMBB-TV; Valeria Lovett, The News Herald; Courtney Hayes, WJHG-TV, all Panama City, FL interviewed staffers about the exhibit and importance in educating the public about the Vision NSS 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO March 29-April 900 Exhibits: TD Technical Exhibit Notes: 400 elementary and middle school students and their teachers visited. Other visitors of note included KSC Center Director Jim Kennedy and Deputy Director Woodrow Whitlow; Deena Contreras, legislative assistant to Congressman Ken Calvert of California; Daniel Heimerdinger, Executive Vice President and CTO for Valador. Dr. Heimerdinger’s company aided in the writing of the CAIB report and also ran the CAIB website. Kim Posey, Fox 31, Denver, Colorado, filmed a short piece using the NASA exhibit as a backdrop. SPELMAN COLLEGE, ATLANTA, GA. Exhibits: Probe B Mural, 1:100 Shuttle April 2-3 500 FESTIVAL ON THE GREEN, PENSACOLA, FL. April 2-3 3000 Exhibits: Starship 2040 Notes: JSC and MSFC exhibit trailers supported this KSC-sponsored effort that included exhibits about the new Exploration Vision, astronaut speeches and school visits. Pensacola was the third of six city stops during the Starship's Florida Tour. FLORIDA TOUR MIAMI AREA April 5-14 1000 Exhibits: Starship 2040 Notes: This state tour continued with stops at the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville and the Miami Science Center. In Jacksonville, approximately 400 students, parents and museum visitors walked through the exhibit between April 5-7. Despite low attendance -- half of the area schools were out for Spring Break -- we received strong support from Congressman Crenshaw’s office, including a personal visit to and press conference at the exhibit April 6. We talked to 14 groups, including an orphanage visit with the Congressman. Media activities in Jacksonville included WAWS-FOX & CBS, which sent out a videographer Robert Jackson; WJXX-NBC/ABC, which sent a cameraman; WJCT (PBS Radio) which announced the Starship event and interviewed exhibit staffer John Dumoulin; WCGL-AM, which sent a reporter out and aired a story April 5; and The Florida Times-Union, which interviewed staffer John Dumoulin. AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL, BALTIMORE, MD June 18-20 492,000 Exhibits: Vision Station (GRC), Astro Camp (Stennis), Space Suit Photo Op Display (JSC), NASA Mural and Banners (Capitol Exhibits) Notes: The Office of Space Flight Education Outreach team had a variety of hands-on activities and free resources available for children and adults. At Astrocamp thousands of children launched balloon rockets with Styrofoam cup payloads. EVA, the inflatable astronaut was on hand to shake hands and interact with the crowd. Vision Station provided visitors with a simulation opportunity to land the shuttle. Children and adults were pleased to learn about the astronaut space suit, have their photo taken in it, and receive free NASA educational materials. Visitors of note included the mayor and other state officials. Alotta Taylor and Dr. Adena Loston talked with Festival Chair Kwesi MFume about NASA benefits. Approximately 70 attendees representing U.S. and U.K firms specializing in space and satellite technologies and systems were present. Steidle gave a keynote address at a press conference held in the pavilion. Leslie Wayne, New York Times, interviewed Admiral Steidel about exploration and international partnerships and HQ Exhibits Manager Jim Hull about the exhibit. The interview resulted in an article being published on July 21 in the Science Section, “NASA Finally Gets Down To Business Side of Space.” Cable News Network (CNN) International interviewed Admiral Steidel about exploration. The interview resulted in a televised video segment featuring Admiral Steidle, Associate Administrator for Exploration, and Exhibits Manager, Jim Hull. Annette Smith, Farnborough Radio, conducted a live interview with Jim Hull at the exhibit. Carl Desouza, New York Times; A BBC photographer; Graham Barclay, Bloomberg LP; Meridian Broadcasting Limited photographed the 40’x40’ one-NASA exhibit. British Ministry of Defense Digital Photography, photographed Admiral Steidel, Lord Sainsbury and Mr. Dordain at the exhibit. Farnborough Radio conducted live announcements at the exhibit. We shared information about licensing opportunities with various medical technologies (e.g., Composite Embedded-Sensor Obstetrical Forceps, behind the ear hearing aid, powered chair lift, fetal monitor, etc.) Publications included the African American Astronaut fact sheet, Technology Transfer Spin-off books, and NASA technology at your hospital handouts. Visitors of note included Dr. Norvell V. Coots (chair of the Aerospace, Military, and Occupational Medicine section), Dr. Wilma J. Wooten (chair of Women’s Health Division), and doctors and researchers from various fields of medicine. We did receive several inquiries about licensing opportunities. Visitors also expressed their pride in the selection of Dr. Satcher to the astronaut core. Dr. Satcher is the nephew of former Surgeon General David Satcher. The booth consisted of propulsion models and experiment photos from PRL that highlighted the research and experiments being done in this new facility. In addition, the booth featured the "Renewed Discovery of Spirit" video with Neal Armstrong as well as a video welcome made especially for the NOREASCON attendees by astronaut Pam Mallory. Visitors of note included John William Upton of the Independent News Service, Mark Baard from the Wired News, and Mark Catalano with the Northeastern News.
