Special Invited Session 1: Supply Chain Quality Management and Product
Recalls
Room: 3306/3307 Time: 14:30----16:00, July29
Chair(s):
Prof. Stephen Ng, Center for Supply Chain Management & Logistics, Li & Fung Institute of Supply Chain
Management & Logistics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Product harm crises and subsequent product recalls are among a firm’s worst nightmares, because
product recalls can be very costly. These events can not only result in huge losses to a country’s economy,
but can also cause injuries that require high levels of medical treatment and have resulted in permanent
disabilities and death. Considering its impact on operations, a product harm crisis not only has generated
huge losses to manufacturers and overseas brand owners, but also has triggered a detrimental domino effect
throughout the entire supply chain. Though handling product harm crises through proper product recall
strategies is pervasive, it is a short term corrective remedy and is not suitable for firms to sustain their
long-term competitive edge in the marketplace. Organizations should turn their eyes to purse long-term
preventive solution. It is in such a context that this special session is organized. We will have industry
speakers to share with us about the recent development of the management principles and practices adopted
by the industries to handle the emergent supply chain quality issues. Together with the speakers from
academia, a panel section will be organized afterwards to interact with the session attendees.

After the rapid economic developments in the last 30 years, Chinese manufacturers have established
strong production capacities. However, most of them are still operating in the low end of the value chain
and are mainly competing through low cost advantages enabled by low cost of labor, land and other factor
inputs.. In recent years, the Chinese government has promoted the upgrading and transformation of
Chinese enterprises from low value added contract manufacturer to high value added original design
manufacturer (ODM) and original brand manufacturer (OBM). How to transform these enterprises through
learning from supply chain partners and enhancing their innovative capabilities have become pressing
issues for academic researchers, industry practitioners and government officers. In this session, we have
invited scholars from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University and South China University
of Technology to discuss these issues and share their research findings. The main issues to be discussed
include: technological, organizational and managerial innovations, cooperation of industry-university-
research institute and government policies for promoting innovations.

In the wake of the global financial crisis, China has now emerged as the largest automotive market in
the world. Surviving and thriving in this market is a daunting challenge: logistical barriers, cultural barriers,
idiosyncratic consumer preferences, and ever-changing regulations all add to the complexity. In the light of
this, effective and efficient operations management is key to generate competitive advantage. Due to the
importance of the Chinese automotive industry and the intricacy of its value chains, this special session is
designed to discuss the special challenges and issues for managing automobile supply chains in China.
China Europe International Business School and Wuhan University are jointly organizing this session.
They will invite researchers, business executives and government policy makers to join an interactive panel
discussion to share research findings and industry best practices.

While China’s industrial output continues to grow and develop in spite of world-wide industrial
slowdowns, the status of the country’s supply chain infrastructure becomes an increasingly serious issue. In
response, Chinese governmental programs are already well underway to offer relief – at least in the long
run. Many initiatives are complements to projects already underway; others are newer programs intended to
anticipate and encourage increased improvement in domestic goods movements. It is worth noting that – to
date - efforts have been focused first on hardware – highways, roads, rail, ports, power, vehicle
production…
At the same time, social, economic and political programs are well underway with new initiatives
appearing regularly. Developments along these lines are intended to improve the country’s transportation
and supply chain situation with a view towards supporting increased movement of people from primary to
second and third sector employment, with particular interest on improving conditions within the primary
sector. The ministry-level organizations which oversaw and staffed the staff of the Central Planning
organizations have been closed, the quality of education is being examined, and substantial changes in the
structure of the government are being studied…
This presentation will describe the current state of hardware projects and also examine the current (and
more recent) focus on software projects from land reform and removal of all taxes from the peasants to the
early days of China’s first legal system to the demise of the hukou scheme. The country’s future will affect
and be affected by its evolving logistics and supply chain infrastructure.

Special Invited Session 6: Logistics Management in China
Room: 3301/3302 Time: 16:30----18:00, July 29

Prof. Fujun Lai, College of Business, University of Southern Mississippi
China’s logistics industry is experiencing rapid development and plays an increasingly important role
in China’s global economic development. However, many challenges exist in examining logistics in
China, where the marketplace has not been traditionally capitalistic. These challenges include
underdeveloped market mechanism, institutional constraints (e.g., industrial protectionism, regional
protectionism, and monopolistic regulations), cultural differences, and legislation and law enforcement.
This special session is designed to provide some insights for overcoming these challenges. In this special
session, Prof. Chen, Gongyu (Sun Yat-Sen University) will present organizational behavior changes of
Chinese firms in the context of global supply chains. Ms. Wang, Xiaoyu (South China University of
Technology) will discuss the impacts of strategic orientations on business performance of China’s
third-party logistics (3PL) users. Ms. Luo, Li will report their findings regarding the impact of trust and
relationship commitment on 3PL integration and business performance in the context of Mainland China,
Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Mr. Chu, Zhaofang (University of International Business and Economics) will
empirically describe the intervening relationships between logistics outsourcing, integration, outsourcing
relationship quality and performance of China’s 3PL users. Following these presentations, the panelists will
discuss their views on current development, hurdles, and changes of China’s logistics.
