Applied Calculus MTH Derivative

									           Course Outline – Applied Calculus (MTH 270)
I.     Introduction
       Applied Calculus (MTH 270) is designed for students in the fields of business,
       economics and some sciences. The course presents limits of functions, continuity
       of functions, differentiation of algebraic functions and transcendental functions
       with applications, and an introduction to integration of functions.

II.    Prerequisites
       Precalculus I (MTH 163), Precalculus (MTH 166) or equivalent

III.   Instructional Materials
       A. Textbook: Applied Calculus for the Managerial, Life, and Social Sciences,
          by Soo Tan, 6th edition
       B. Graphing calculator (Required; TI 83 or TI 84 recommended)
       C. Course Blackboard and iLrn (ThomsonNOW) web sites

IV.    Overall Objectives
       A. Review equations, graphs and functions
       B. Learn to find the limit of a function
       C. Learn to find the derivative of a function
       D. Apply the derivative to graphing techniques
       E. Apply the derivative to optimization problems
       F. Find the derivative of exponential and logarithmic functions
       G. Learn the process of integration of a function
       H. Apply integration to area problems

V.     Instructional Strategies
       A variety of instructional strategies will be employed in addition to classroom
       discussion. These include, but are not limited to, small group activities in class
       and online group assignments.

VI.    Attendance Policy
       I expect you to attend every class session. Mathematics is a comprehensive
       subject and builds on itself. If you are unable to attend a session, contact me or a
       classmate to find out what you missed. You are responsible for reading the
       sections covered in each class, and doing the assignments as listed in the syllabus.

       More than 20% absence of the class sessions for the semester constitutes
       unsatisfactory attendance and will place you in jeopardy of being withdrawn
       from class.

VII.   Supplements
       A set of 16 videotapes is available in the library. They are for textbooks by
       another author (Calculus - An Applied Approach and Brief Calculus - An Applied
       Approach, by Larson and Edwards) but can still be of use to you. Other
       instructional resources may be available from me in my office.
