      EQUIVALENT OR LOWER QUALIFICATIONS (ELQs)
In 2008 the Government announced that it would no longer provide funding to support universities teaching students
studying for a qualification that is equivalent to, or lower than, a qualification that they already hold. This is commonly
known as ELQ policy. As an example of this policy, if you currently hold a bachelor’s degree and want to study for another
bachelor’s degree, you will be affected by this policy. There are some exemptions from this policy and these are, broadly, as
      follows:
those studying undergraduate courses in medicine, dentistry, social work, nursing and midwifery
those taking courses that lead to qualified teacher status
those studying for a foundation degree
those students in receipt of Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)
In such circumstances of reduced government funding, London Metropolitan University, along with other institutions, has
been left with little choice but to raise the tuition fees for those students who do fall under this policy. For more information
on ELQ please contact the Admissions Office.

1. The fee quoted is the UK/EU fee because overseas (non-EU) students are not normally eligible to study on a part-time basis. Eligibility to

you can study part-time, the fee that you will be charged will be pro rata the full-time overseas fee. For example, an undergraduate

Tuition fee policy
As part of its commitment to responsible recruitment the University offers the following guidance on policy governing the payment of tuition fees. This policy
is designed to be fair and equitable to students and to support the University’s attempts to hold tuition fee rises to a minimum at a time of
economic stringency in Higher Education.
1. Tuition fees must either be paid in full at enrolment or paid under an approved instalment plan. If any payment agreed under an approved instalment plan is
not made by the due date, an additional late charge of £100 may be imposed.
2. An early payment discount on the full tuition fee will be given to self-financing students as outlined on pg 17.
3. The University accepts all major debit and credit cards, except American Express, and direct debit in settling tuition fee accounts.
4. Refunds of tuition fees are at the discretion of the University and will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. All such refunds can only be
authorised by the Director of Academic Administration, or nominee. Refunds granted in exceptional circumstances will normally be calculated on a termly
basis. Thus, for example, a student who withdraws in exceptional circumstances at any time during the first term would normally receive a refund of tuition
fees for the second and third terms only. For part-time students on modular courses a refund of the module fee may be granted where there is clear
evidence that the module was not started. A standard administration charge (£100) will apply to all refunds. In addition further charges will be applied
where the University has incurred additional recruitment costs, either through its agents or overseas offices. This amount will be deducted from any refund
   that might be agreed.
5. Students who register for a course and then subsequently withdraw without having paid tuition fees will remain liable for the full fees for the course unless
the withdrawal has been occasioned by exceptional circumstances. In such cases the Director of Academic Administration, or nominee, has authority to
waive a part of the fee. Fee waivers will normally be calculated on a termly basis. Thus, for example, a student who withdraws in exceptional circumstances
at any time during the first term would normally be allowed a waiver of tuition fees for the second and third terms only. For part-time students on modular
courses a waiver of the module fee may be granted where there is clear evidence that the module was not started.
6. If a student chooses to defer entry, having already paid tuition fees, the University will normally retain the tuition fees and set these against the academic
year/semester when the student does commence his/her studies at the University. This will also apply in circumstances where a student elects to change
   course at the University.
7. The University’s Student Services Department urges intending students to plan their finances well in advance. Students are very welcome to consult the
Department’s comprehensive advice on financial management should they experience difficulty whilst studying at the University.
8. Fees will not normally be refundable where a student has deliberately given false information or omitted relevant information and as a result is subsequently
required to leave the course or where a student has enrolled on a course but subsequently does not pass the Criminal Records Bureau check.

Additional notes for International Students
           1. In some countries, the British Embassy or High Commission will only issue a student visa if the student has paid some of their tuition fees to the
University. Usually your University receipt is sufficient evidence. If you require a letter, contact the Finance Office (see key contacts
section for details of the International Finance Officer)
           2. Students, when they enrol, incur formal responsibility for the full payment of relevant tuition fees. For those students taking one
or more English language courses in advance of an academic course, this includes responsibility for both the English
language course(s) and the academic course.
           3. The University will notify the UK Home Office Immigration Service when a student withdraws or leaves
              his/her course.
                                                                                                                                                                             y
