Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) John A. Risher was assigned as the
Aerospace Science Instructor at West Monroe High School in
Chief Risher is a native of Bastrop, Louisiana. He graduated from
Bastrop High School. He earned an Associate Degree in Applied
Science in Administrative Management from the Community
College of the Air Force. His professional military education
includes the Air Training Command NCO Academy in resident and
correspondence. Chief Risher completed by correspondence the
First Sergeant and Senior NCO Academy courses. He is also a
graduate of the Air Force Recruiting School.
Chief Risher enlisted into the Air Force April 1965. He began his Career as a Flight
records clerk at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas. In March 1967 he was assigned to the
2nd Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., where he also served as a flight records
clerk. In August 1967 he was transferred to TUSLOG Det 5, Ankara, Turkey, a 2nd
Weather Detachment. In November 1967 he was reassigned to 2nd Weather Wing
Headquarters, Wiesbaden Air Base, Germany. In January 1969 he volunteered for Air
Force ROTC duty and was assigned to AFROTC Det 320A, Nicholls State University,
Thibodaux, La., as detachment Sergeant Major.
During his ROTC assignment Chief Risher became interested in recruiting duty through
his relationship with the local Air Force recruiter. He volunteered for recruiting duty and
graduated from the Air Force Recruiting School in March 1972. Chief Risher was
assigned to Monroe La. as a recruiter from March 1972 to Jan 1976. Chief Risher was
assigned to the Fargo North Dakota Military Enlistment Processing Station from Jan
1976 to May 1979. From May 1979 to May 1981 he was assigned to the Airman
Classification Squadron, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. From May 1981 to July 1983
he served as Flight Supervisor in Little Rock, Arkansas. July 1983 to December 1985
Chief Risher was assigned as the Operations Supervisor 3548th USAF Recruiting
Squadron Little Rock, Arkansas. From December 1985 to May 1988 he was assigned to
the 3504th USAF Recruiting Group, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas as the Group
Operations Supervisor. In April 1988 Chief Risher was selected to be the
Superintendent of the 3546th USAF Recruiting Squadron, Houston, Texas, where he
served until his retirement May 1991.
After retirement Chief Risher has served as a private investigator for EQUIFAX, Inc.,
General Manager of a Agriculture cooperative, and a Louisiana Department Of Veterans
Affairs Service Counselor for Morehouse and West Carroll Parishes.
His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the
Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Good Conduct
Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, and the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze
Chief Risher is married to the former Emily Akers of Mer Rouge, La. They have two
married sons who both served in the USAF.
