     PROGRAM B- DANCE CAROUSEL
       40 ONE-MINUTE DANCES

   AND THE SHORT ATTENTION SPAN!
DANCE FOR THE CONCISE CHOREOGRAPHER

                 6
Choreographers are required to create four one-minute long dances that can relate to one
Description:

another thematically or through a story-line, or be completely autonomous from one
another. You will perform 4 sections, in groups of 10, and each section repeats in the same
order: example: Jane, John, Jo … until the last of the 10 choreographer shows their piece,
pause, the same order: Jane, John, Jo… repeats again for the next section until we complete
all 4 sections. There is a brief intermission after the 2nd section. It’s like a carousel!

If chosen, keep Sunday June 26 open for tech and dress. Tech will happen in 2- 2.5 hour
Tech:

blocks where 5 choreographers will tech in each block. We will run the entire performance
in the evening (Please block out another 2 hours for this). It is very important to experience
Dance Carousel as group performance and not as separate dance pieces.

Choreographers will have one light cue or “look” per piece, no black-outs in between
Lighting:

pieces, but the lighting shift can often work as a blackout. To explain an example might be:
Jane has side lights, her piece exits, lights shift to overhead front while John enters the
space, his piece ends and lights shift to a center spot for Jo’s….and so on. You should have
an idea of the “look” and order of your four pieces before tech.

Music is due June 19 for us to make a master CD with all the dance pieces in order. The
Music:

best way is to send us an MP3 via email, second best is on a CD labeled and in order of your
4 pieces. I highly encourage working with a composer, but if you use recorded music
please edit your work professionally, try to avoid abrupt endings or random cuts. If using
silence, a bell will indicate your minute (we will add that to the master CD).

You may show video during your piece or exclusively as your piece.
Video:

We will have one mandatory group meeting to discuss the logistics of Dance Carousel,
Meeting:

about two weeks before tech: date TBA. We are essentially incorporating a mini-festival
inside of a festival. Organization is very important for this to have maximum impact! Dance
Carousel is one of my most favorite, and also dance audiences most favorite, showcases, it
holds so much potential. I am raising the barre (pun intended) and really asking

What is dance in concision? (If you are applying from out-of-town the mandatory
participants to fully embrace the possibilities of what a one-minute dance can be.

meeting will be a phone call from Ellen Bartel instead. All other due dates cannot be
waived.)
