Shannon Harbour Rally
Gerry Messitt explained that with the late formation of the committee the branch was
now behind in organising events especially the Shannon Harbour Rally and asked for
volunteers to help. The following put their names forward.

Skip Heinecke, Jim Eyre, Gill & Hugh McIntyre, Margaret & Leonard Geoghegan,
Mark Perry, Paul Fitzpatrick, Tony & Mandy Ryan, Des & Adriene Ryan, Dermot
McIntyre, Brendan Walls, Dermot & Noeleen Jordan.

Gerry made several proposals for the rally:-

   1. Open air band
   2. Marquee
   3. Have a bar and band in the shed
   4. Enterprise as “Gig Rig”

There were many problems envisaged with the above. Des Byrne advised of
problems with insurance and public disorder. Permission would also need to be
sought from Waterways Ireland. It was suggested that the local publicans could fund
the band and public liability insurance. Greg Whelan advised of the problems with
the shed and early closing last year due to complaints.

Action: Check with WI, insurance and police. Meeting with local publicans.

Helen Kelly suggested liaising with the Local Development Committee and Andy
Crilly, secretary of the committee agreed to arrange a meeting.
It was also suggested to have a cruiser available to bring local children on trips on the

A proposal to have some kind of car boot sale or country fair on the Sunday of the
Rally was put forward. Grainne Kirwan said that there was a craft fair in the
Belmont, Moystown, High Street districts and thought it could be arranged for the

Portumna would be the venue for Good Friday with a skipper’s briefing on the
Saturday morning with a view to travelling further on weather permitting.

25-26/06/05 Shannon Harbour Canal Boat Rally
See above.

Sept t.b.a. Dry Rally
Westport and Castlebar are the venues for this year’s dry rally. It was agreed to make
it an overnight stay because of the distance. Suggestions were made to move the Dry
Rally to the October bank holiday weekend but this was dismissed due to problems
arising with family issues.

29-31/10/05 End of Season CIC
Ballinasloe was voted as a non-runner in October due to high water levels. It was
suggested to move the end of season CIC to September but Aimee Walls pointed out
that the younger members of the branch would not be able to attend due to
school/college commitments. It was decided to re-introduce an end of season dinner
with perhaps the Radisson in Athlone being the venue.

TBA Suck it n c
No suitable weekend could be agreed for a trip to Ballinasloe.

Des Byrne highlighted the problems caused by Victoria Lock closing at lunchtime
Sundays on busy weekends. He was aware that Jamestown lock remained open
lunchtime Sundays. Pat Henry advised the meeting that to the best of his knowledge it
was a group of local boat owners who paid the lock keeper to stay open. It was
agreed that the branch would initially approach the lock keeper.

Gerry Messitt informed the meeting of a suggestion at the last Council Meeting that
officers should be elected in different areas of branches to facilitate communication.
Notice boards could be erected in Banagher, Lusmagh and Shamrock with local
officer responsible for updating same. A motion was passed to source and erect the
notice boards. Proposed: Noel Manning Seconded: Seamus Dooley.
Des Byrne asked if branch meetings could be changed to morning time for the
summer months to facilitate members who wanted to go out on their boats. There
were no problems envisaged with this.

The meeting supported a Raffle being held by the Local Development Committee to
raise funds to develop a professional local development plan.

Gerry thanked everyone for attending. There being no further business the meeting
then concluded.
