What is a metal detector?
An electronic instrument that can f

 called metal detector. It has the
ability to pass through the sand, s
oil, wood and any other non-metalli
c items. It can track anything meta
llic.

How the metal detector is constructe
d?
An elementary metal detector has an
 electronic box along with a batter
y on one side, with a handle to let
 the operator place his arm. It has
 a coil made of insulated wire wrap
ped around the telescoping shaft an
d ends in a round plastic disk. The
 disk is displaced from the shaft m
aking an angle that helps it to mai
ntain parallel position to the floo
r. The operator holds the electroni
c box and switches on the power to
start sweeping the coil slowly on t
he ground till there is an electron
ic signal. This signal shows the pr
esence of a metallic item underneat
h the area already swept by the coil.

How does a metal detector work?
Metal detectors use the principal o
f electromagnetism and the effect i
t exerts on metals. The metal coil
called the transmitter works on the
 battery power and generates a magn
etic field that works on the surrou
ndings. When this field enters the
ground, any metallic item becomes m
agnetic. This generates the electro
nic signal, which is detected by th
e receiver in the coil. Receiver in
 turn dispatches a signal to the el
ectronic box. The speaker makes thi
s sound louder, generating a beep f
or the operator. The electronic box
 consists of microprocessors to mea
sure the time lag between charging
the area and receiving the signal.
This time lag is called the phase s
hift and lets you know which metals
 are present. Using this principle,
 you can configure the high-end met
al detectors to look out for specif
