xploration. Science finds new ways
to make use of actuators every day
including for medical purposes. Man
y scientists believe that the more
they study these seemingly simple m
achines, the more they will discove
r ways of helping mankind.

The way in which a linear actuator
works is that there is a motor that
 rotates a drive screw using a sync
hronous timing belt drive. Some lin
ear actuators can also use a worm g
ear drive or direct drive. Which ev
er the choice, the turning of the s
crew pushes a drive nut along the s
crew, which in turn pushes the rod
out and the rotating the screw in t
he opposite direction will retract
the rod. According to the Associati
on of Sciences, the drive screw is
either an ACME or ball thread or is
 belt-driven which is what gives th
e machine its motion. A cover tube
protects the screw nut from environ
mental elements and contamination t
hus allowing for the machines use c
ontinually without the chance of it
 getting gummed up. Radial thrust b
earings permit the screw to rotate
freely under loaded conditions and
gives the linear actuator its strength.

Linear actuators usually serve as p
art of motion control systems. Thes
e days most are run by computers. C
ontrol systems, a device that you f

ntrol objects. This is made possibl
e by the actuators.

There are various forms of energy t
hat run actuators. These forms of e
nergy include, hydraulic, pneumatic
, mechanical and electrical. Linear

cs and factory automation.

es in a straight line. This is the
basic concept that drives the linea
r actuator. One has to stop and con

or which type they need to fit the
