Adapted from humorist Jean Shepherd

: All Others Pay Cash, A Christmas
Story has climbed the ranks of the
annual holiday classic films list t
o claim its spot among the hallowed
elite of the genre. If you_ve ever
tried to lick a frozen telephone p
ole, or found yourself in a ridicul
ous bunny outfit on Christmas morni
ng, then A Christmas Story is one c
omedy you won_t want to miss&

A Christmas Story focuses on one ce
ntral character, fifth grader Ralph
ie (Peter Billingsley) and his all-
encompassing quest to receive a Dai
sy Brand Red-Ryder BB rifle for Chr
istmas, although I don_t think he r
ealizes he could put an eye out wit
h one of those things& Thwarting Ra
lphie at every turn are his mother
(Melinda Dillon) and father (Darren
 McGavin) who seem absolutely obliv
ious to their young son_s dream.

Unable to come right out and say wh
at he wants, Ralphie drops subtle h
ints around the house such as placi
ng clipped-out magazine ads for the
gun in his parents_ nightstand rea
ding material. When prodded for his
 true Christmas wish, Ralphie blurt
s out that he wants a Daisy Brand R
ed-Ryder BB gun, but his mother_s o
nly reply is, _You don_t want one o
f those. You'll shoot your eye out!_

A Christmas Story is filled with me
morable scenes and highlights that
have helped built a cult following
around the life of a young boy obse
ssed with Christmas who is surround
ed by a varied cast eccentric frien
ds and family members. When Ralphie
_s father beams with pride at his a
bility to win a newspaper contest,
his proudly displays his prize in t
he front window of the family home,
 a three-foot lamp with a woman_s l
ong, stocking-covered leg as its ba
se. Embarrassed, Ralphie_s mother _
accidentally_ breaks it, sparking a
war of words with her husband. Mea
nwhile, Ralphie dreams of saving th
e whole family with his Red-Ryder B
B gun, thus earning the family_s un
dying gratitude.

One of the best sequences in the fi
lm involves a family trip to the lo
cal department store, where Ralphie
and his little brother Randy meet
with the store Santa Clause near cl
osing time. Following a long, exten
ded wait to reach the front of the
line to see Santa, Ralphie is so br
imming with anticipation to tell Sa
nta what he wants that he can_t spe
ak. So, Santa convinces Ralphie tha
t he wants a football. But before S
anta_s helper can push Ralphie down
the North Pole slide, Ralphie blur
ts out his true wish, only to hear
Santa_s reply, _You_ll shoot your e
ye out with that, kid!_

One of the best Christmas comedies
ever made, although few come close
to National Lampoon_s Christmas Vac
ation, A Christmas Story is a memor
able holiday classic the entire fam
ily can enjoy. Much like It_s A Won
derful Life, the film has only grow
n in popularity in the years since
its release. The timeless nature of
its subject matter lends itself we
ll to annual holiday viewing, and i
t remains one of a handful of _must
see_ films for the Christmas season&
