Although not nearly as s uccessful in terms of critical accl aim as the aforementioned film, or later Disney creations such as The Lion King and Finding Nemo, Aladdin is nevertheless just as entertaini ng and probably the funniest of all the animated Disney features. With the voice of Robin Williams leadin g the way, the film is a non-stop f oray into the timeless fantasy worl d of A Thousand And One Arabian Nig hts spliced together with the rapie r-like wit and quick-fire humor of one of America_s most talented comi c performers& The film takes place hundreds of ye ars ago in the windswept sands of t he kingdom of Agrabah, where a youn g street urchin named Aladdin wande rs the streets, stealing and hustli ng for survival. Along the way, he_ s joined by his loyal companion Abu , a clever and enterprising monkey. Yet, in stark contrast to the pove rty-ridden streets below, the lustr ous facade of a massive palace towe rs high above the urban world of Al addin. Inside, the Sultan of Agraba h lives a carefree life of opulence and luxury with his beautiful daug hter Jasmine and a cunning, ambitio us adviser named Jafar. Forced to spend her days inside the palace walls, the headstrong Princ ess Jasmine sneaks out in order to experience the world around her. Du ring this dangerous trek through th e streets of her kingdom, the girl befriends Aladdin who is immediatel y awestruck by her beauty. But when Princess Jasmine_s escape is broug ht to the attention of Jafar and he r father, she is quickly rounded up , and Aladdin is thrown in prison. Hoping to seize the kingdom for him self, Jafar enlists the aid of Alad din in an effort to obtain a fabled magic lamp, the purported powers o f which are unlimited. Legend has i t that only a _diamond in the rough _ is capable of retrieving the lamp from the Cave of Wonders. All othe rs will be swallowed whole by the e ndless sands of the desert. When Aladdin fails in Jafar_s quest , he is left for dead. But he soon discovers the mysterious lamp and t he blue genie who resides within. G ranting Aladdin the ultimate power of three wishes (with certain condi tions such as not wishing for more wishes or wishing for someone to fa ll in love with you), the genie tra nsforms Aladdin into a powerful Pri nce, thus making him eligible to ma rry Princess Jasmine. Riding into A grabah at the helm of a triumphant parade, only Jafar knows the true s ecret of Aladdin_s identity and his success, and he_s determined to sc heme and connive until he gains con trol of the magic lamp himself& Aside from Robin Williams, this fil m is easily forgettable. With him, Aladdin is transformed into a legen dary blockbuster hit. In fact, the later appearances of comic voices i n animated films such as Shrek (Mik e Myers and Eddie Murphy), Mulan (E ddie Murphy), Finding Nemo (Ellen D eGeneres), and The Lion King (Natha n Lane & Whoopi Goldberg) can most likely be traced back to the overwh elmingly positive audience reaction to Robin Williams and the comic re lief his blue genie provided. This once overlooked aspect of the anima ted film has since become a staple, and Aladdin is the reason why. In addition, the film boasts a beautif ul soundtrack that gave birth to th e chart-topping hit _A Whole New Wo rld_. Fun for children and adults a like, Aladdin is the perfect film f or those who enjoy creativity, humo r, and a great story&
