he name rear projection TV. Other r
ear projection TV sets use LCD, dig
ital light processing (DLP), or liq
uid crystal on silicon (LCoS) techn
ology in place of CRTs. These high
tech rear projection TV sets are th
inner, lighter, and as a result mor
e expensive than comparable CRT-bas
ed sets – but they produce a higher
-quality picture.

Major brands of rear projection LCD
 TV sets include Hitachi, Mitsubish
i, Panasonic, Philips, RCA, Samsung
, Sony, and Toshiba. The most popul
ar models are HD capable, and there
are three basic types of HD TVs.

So how do you choose the right rear
projection LCD TV for you and your
 viewing needs?
First, consider the space you have
available before you worry about th
e screen size itself. Most rear pro
jection LCD TVs have screens measur
ing from 42 to well over 60 inches.
You might be tempted to purchase o
ne of the biggest screens, which ca
n span as much as 70 inches or more
, but first determine how much floo
r space you can spare, and plan to
view the TV from around 7 to 10 fee
t away for optimal picture quality.

Also consider depth and price. Once
you know how much room you have, d
ecide whether size or price is more
 important. CRT-based sets are floo
r-standing models with deep cabinet
s mounted on casters. Some take up
as much space as an armchair or lov
eseat. Many rear projection LCD TV
sets are tabletop units, or you can
buy a separate stand for a few hun
dred dollars.

Then focus on picture quality. The
best rear projection LCD TV sets de
liver very good picture quality wit
h HD content and good picture quali
ty for DVDs and regular TV programm
ing. Rear projection LCD TV screens
 provide much better picture qualit
y than CRT models.
Also check the viewing angle. Some
rear projection LCD TV sets display
a better image from off-center tha
n older sets did, which is importan
t if your TV will be watched by sev
eral people at the same time. Befor
e buying a particular model, see ho
w the picture looks if you step off
to the side or move up and down. W
ith some rear projection LCD TV set
s you'll see a dimmer, washed-out i
mage as your viewing position angle
s away.

Once you’ve made your choice, it pa
ys to think about whether you want
an extended warranty on your rear p
rojection LCD TV. While extended wa
rranties may not be worth it for mo
st products, they may be for high-p
riced TVs. Because rear projection
LCD TV sets are expensive, check in
to the cost of a service plan. Find
out whether in-home service is cov
ered and whether a replacement is p
rovided if your rear projection LCD
 TV can't be repaired.
