One of the newest additions in tele

ns are the 21st century display dev
ices which are fast becoming a popu
lar choice among television viewers
. Plasma televisions have higher re
solution and quality performance th
an other conventional televisions;
they guarantee crisp and clear imag
es, and superior quality.

Plasma televisions became a reality
 after the successful invention of
the plasma display panel in 1964, b
y Donald L. Bitzer and H. Gene Slot
tow at the University of Illinois a
t Urbana-Champaign. Embracing a uni
que technology, Plasma televisions
produce pictures from a combination
of inert gases such as xenon and n
eon. When the gas is charged using
electrodes, the atoms collide with
each other and release energy in th
e form of invisible ultra violet (U
V) light. The light is then focused
on the three phosphors (red, green
, and blue) and a brilliant picture
 is produced.

Plasma televisions come as Enhanced
Definition TV (EDTV) with a resolu
tion of 852x480 and the Higher Defi
nition TV (HDTV) featuring a native
 resolution of 1024x768. Plasma tel
evisions have a high widescreen asp
ect ratio - the ratio between the w
idth and height of the screen. As p
lasma televisions do not use any el
ectron beams like the conventional
ones, they are immune to the effect
s of magnetic fields. They offer a
wider viewing angle and accurate im
age reproduction. Plasma television
s are slim and space-saving and can
even be hung on a wall. Moreover,
most of the plasma televisions come
with a flat screen which eliminate
s edge distortion.

Plasma televisions can be used in m
eeting rooms, corporate offices, an
d network control rooms. They are i
deal choices for home-theater enthu
siasts. On account of quality perfo
rmance in ambient light, plasma tel
evisions are widely opted for telec
onferencing.

A countless number of retail and on
line stores specialize in plasma te
levision sale. Due to their inheren
t merits, plasma televisions are be
coming the most demanded alternativ
e to the standard CRT and projectio
n televisions.
