Think history is boring? Think agai

 most popular and entertaining seri
es ever produced. A 1976 mini-serie
s, starring many of the best known
theatrical performers of its day, I
Claudius is one of, if not the, gr
eatest productions chronicling the
history of the Roman Empire. Coveri
ng the period from the later years
of Augustus's rule as the first emp
eror of Rome to the death of Empero
r Claudius, I Claudius takes a look
at the social and political underp
innings and developments of the Rom
an Empire through the eyes of Claud
ius, an often overlooked member of
the emperor's family. An epic in th
e true sense of the word, I Claudiu
s should be on every film buff's vi
ewing list…

A young male connected to the famil
y line of Emperor Augustus, Claudiu
s suffers from a strange limp and a
n odd stutter which make him appear
 to be a simple-minded youth. But C
laudius maintains a keen intellect,
and he observes the events around
him with meticulous precision. As t
he end of Augustus's long reign as
emperor nears its end, the ruler is
in desperate search of an heir. Bu
t what he doesn't know is that his
wife Livia is determined to see her
son from a previous marriage, Tibe
rius, ascend to the throne. As such
, Livia will stop at nothing to mur
der and ruin those who stand in the
way - such as far more noble and d
eserving heir Germanicus. Through d
rowning, poisoning, and less subtle
 means, she insures Tiberius become
s the next in the line of succession…

Meanwhile, Claudius observes from t
he shadows as the ambitious Sejanus
 (Patrick Stewart) conspires to obt
ain the throne and the infamous Cal
igula rises to power. When his rela
tive is murdered because of his ter
rible reign of insanity, Claudius i
s thrust upon the throne, and he at
tempts to rule with a firm hand of
justice and restore the republic to
 its rightful place of power…

Wrought with suspense, I Claudius w
ill make its viewers question how a
ny human survived the era known as
the ancient Roman Empire. The murde
rs, double-crossings, and various a
ffairs seem to be drawn from a fict
ional paperback found on drugstore
shelves - not in the pages of a his
tory book. But I Claudius stays tru
e to the written account of Roman E
mperor Claudius who wrote his memoi
rs during the few years of his reig
n as the supreme leader of the grea
test empire ever to exist on Earth.
The result is a story more intrigu
ing than any book or film since pro
duced…

With superb theatrical performances
by the entire cast (including Patr
ick Stewart as Sejanus), I Claudius
is an engrossing storyline about t
he true-to-life people and events t
hat shaped the history of ancient R
ome. Like the popular prime-time so
ap opera Dallas, viewers are drawn
to the intrigue surrounding the var
ious characters without even realiz
ing they're learning history in the
 process! Given its historical accu
racy, brilliant dialogue, and ingen
ious performances, I Claudius ranks
 as a definite must-see series of f
ilms. In fact, one of the top five
best of all time…
