PRIMARY FUNCTION
To develop and manage a productive, independent program of research in malignant mesothelioma epidemiology
research that is consistent with the aims of the Asbestos Diseases Researc h Institute and the new Cancer
Epidemiology and Cancer Services Research Group, established as a partnership between The University of
Sydney and the Cancer Institute NSW.


OVERVIEW OF THE SCHOOL / DEPARTMENT AND POSITION CONTEXT
The Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) was established by the Asbestos Diseas es Res earch
Foundation (A DRF), a charitable, not-for-profit foundation dedicat ed to assist and support the research efforts of
ADRI int o asbestos-related diseases. The ADRI is located in t he Bernie Banton Centre on the Concord Hospital
Campus. This state-of-the-art research cent re conducts translational research projects and aims to contribute to
preventative measures and improve treatment and enhance the quality of life of those affected by asbestos-
related diseases . The Cancer E pidemiology and Ca ncer Services Res earc h Group has been established as a
partnership between The University of Sydney and the Cancer Institute NSW. The overarching aim of this novel
partnership is to conduct practice and policy relevant epidemiological and health services research to improve
outcomes for people with cancer. The group will develop programs across a broad spectrum of aetiological and
applied epidemiological research, including research that addresses the causes of cancer, cancer prevention,
screening and early detection, cancer care and outcomes.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and results-driven academic to join Asbestos Diseases Research Institute
(ADRI)/Bernie Banton Centre and Cancer Epidemiology and Canc er Services Research Group. The Senior
Epidemiologist will provide a vital role in identifying research opportunities and managing these projects from
conception to publication. The S enior Epidemiologist will liaise with key stakeholders including senior staff at the
ADRI, the Cancer Epidemiology and Cancer S ervices Research Group, the Cancer Institute NSW, policy makers
and clinicians to maximise the relevance of the research to policy and practice. The Senior Epidemiologist will be
co-located at the A DRI (Bernie B anton Centre) and Cancer Epidemiology and Canc er Servic es Research Group
(University of Sydney and the Cancer Institute NSW) within a vibrant team of senior academics, postdoctoral
researchers and postgraduate students at Concord, the Camperdown Campus of the University of Sydney and
at the Canc er Institute NSW. The Senior Lecturer will be wholly employ ed by the University of Sydney but will
be located at the Cancer Institute NSW at least 50% of her/his time.



KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
     Develop, implement and manage an independent program of mesothelioma epidemiology.

     Develop a strategic plan to attract external funding and submit grant and fellowship applications.    As
