REQUIRED TEXT
Brigham and Houston, Fundamentals of Financial Management (Concise Second Edition), The Dryden
Press.

CALCULATOR
You are required to have a financial calculator in this class. I do not care which kind you obtain, but it
must be able to perform IRR. Several are available, and I will be using the overhead version of the BA-II
Plus by Texas Instruments. You are responsible for learning how to operate your financial calculator and
you must be familiar with it by the time we cover Chapter 6. We WILL NOT spend precious time in class
learning to operate the calculators!!! You may not share a calculator on an exam with another student.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course is designed for the general business student. This is intended to be a survey course. We will
start with a general overview and then we will cover other concepts and ideas in detail. You will be
introduced to the world of finance. You will also be introduced to the basic financial concepts such as time
value of money and the risk and return tradeoff.

GRADING
Your grade will consist of quizzes, exams, and homework.

Exam I 25%
Exam II 25%
Final 25%
Quizzes 15%
Homework 10%

HOMEWORK
Approximately every two weeks you will be given a homework assignment that is due the following week.
For example, if I give you homework on January 20, it will be due January 27. Homework assignments
will generally be problematic. The assignments are intended to assist you in preparation for quizzes and
homework. Homework will count toward 10% of your final grade. Some assignments will require use of a
spreadsheet, like Excel.

Homework buckets. There will be homework buckets placed in the classroom. It is your responsibility to
have your homework in the bucket AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS PERIOD THAT IT IS
DUE!! Late homework will receive a grade of 0.

EXTRA PROBLEMS
Attached to the syllabus is a list of problems from your text. These problems are sample problems and are
intended to be used as "practice problems." The solutions manual is on reserve at the library under my
name.
QUIZZES and EXAMS
Quizzes: We will have 5 quizzes that count 30 points each. You may drop the lowest quiz. Therefore,
quizzes may not be made up. The quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class. You will have
approximately 20 minutes for each quiz. We will have class after each quiz.
Exams: There will be 2 exams and a final. A legitimate conflict with any of the examinations can only be
determined by the instructor. Failure to obtain this approval PRIOR TO THE EXAM will result in a
ZERO grade. If you miss an exam and the two above conditions are satisfied: 1) you contacted the
instructor prior to the original exam date, and 2) a legitimate conflict is approved by the instructor, you
will be allowed to make up the exam provided that you make it up within one week of the original date of
the exam. If you are late arriving for a quiz or an exam, you will not be given additional time to complete
it.

GRADING SCALE

The following scale will be used for grading purposes:
                                             100 - 94 A
