Testing Vocabulary
Document Sample

Picture (objective).
In the testing of children who have not yet reached the reading stage, vocabulary may be
measured with pictures. Two types of picture items have frequently been used.
In first type, the examiner pronounces the name of an object and ask the child to indicate, by
pointing or making a pencil mark, which one of set of pictures show the object named.
For example: the test booklet might contain four picture-of a book, a plane, a car, and a bird-and
the examiner might ask, " Draw a circle around the plane?"
If the child has the basic concepts they will automatically mark the plane picture with a circle
and if children do not have the basic concepts child will not mark the plane picture with a circle.
In the second type, the examiner shows a picture and then the children were asked to say the
picture in English.
For example: What is it?
It is a car
In this case is not just limited to lexical but also ability to produce simple sentences and mastery
of articles a, an, the.
The examiner also should encourage the child to answer questions in complete sentences.
Advantages and disadvantages
An advantage of testing vocabulary with picture was the child easy to remember a concept, and
disadvantages only a limited two parts of speech noun and verb.
