                                    This position attracts a remuneration package of $76,851 to $88,279 per
                                    annum which includes 17% superannuation. The salary component is

POSITION SUMMARY


 Background:

  The La Trobe University International College has been established, inter alia, to develop the profile of the
  University overseas and has particular responsibility for the recruitment of international students for stand-
  alone ELICOS courses as well as pathway English language courses for the University’s award programs.
  The College is also responsible for providing Foundation Studies and the D iploma pathway program to
  further study at the University. Functions of the College include the promotion of the College and University
  abroad, the recruitment and admission of fee-paying international and domestic students either as
  individuals or groups studying under specific arrangements, the provision of support services for students
  and the establishment of language and academic pre -university pathways off-shore and interstate to
  increase the flow of international and domestic students studying at the University.

 Primary Objectives:

 This position is responsible for curriculum, teaching quality, and teacher professional development. The
 position involves participation in the program management team with responsibility for the overall
 direction of curriculum development, and teacher professional development, and will be assisted by
 Leading Teachers.

 The position will work closely with the Director of Studies/Program Manager in a number of areas
 including the overseas teachers’ training programs. The position will also be involved in the planning
 and development of short courses and special programs.
 The incumbent in this position is to
     1.     ensure continuing improvement in the quality of teaching programs.
     2.     provide leadership in curriculum maintenance, renewal and development.
     3.     ensure appropriate professional development of teaching staff.
     4.     provide leadership in the administration of teacher appraisal processes.
     5.     contribute to teacher recruitment processes.
     6.     contribute substantially to the development of the Centre’s profile as a provider of professional
            development programs for teachers of EFL



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

         The occupant of this position must be able to:                                                 %


         Provide leadership in the area of curriculum and methodology for all programs, with
         overall responsibility for maintenance, renewal, development and documentation of

         curriculum and assessment practices . Responsibility for monitoring of student
         progress, reports and certification.

         Oversee the teacher performance management scheme and provide guidance to                      15

         teachers on all aspects of the scheme and its processes .


         Assist the Program Manager/Director of Studies in (offshore and onshore) placement
         testing, drawing up of timetables and the recruitment, induction, mentoring and
 3.      appraisal of teachers new to the College. Liaise closely with Admissions team s at the         15
         International College and IPO regarding recommendations of length of study of
         prospective students on pathway programs .


         Provide leadership in pedagogical aspects of the profess ional development of
 4.      teachers including evaluation, renewal and update of teaching resources, and current           10
         approaches to teaching relevant to the ESL field.

         Contribute to all aspects of the continuous improvement of the Centre’s programs and

         their delivery, through personal initiative, and as part of a Program Management Team

         Make a significant contribution to the College’s profile as a provider of ESL/EFL

         teacher professional development programs, locally and internationally.

         Teach on an ad-hoc basis if required in ELICOS and special group and teacher

         training programs. Oversee emergency teaching and mentoring of teachers .

 8.      Oversee recruitment, and induction of teachers new to the Centre                               5

         Oversee all external testing conducted at the College e.g. TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS,

         Cambridge examinations, etc.

SELECTION CRITERIA

         Essential Requirements

 1.      A Masters degree of TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or Education, and substantial experience at a
         senior level in teaching staff appraisal processes and curriculum development for EFL/ESL for
         adults.

  2.     A comprehensive understanding of current approaches to English language teaching, including
         individual learning and various technologically based methods and techniques.
  3.      Extensive experience and organisational skills in several areas of teaching English to adults and
          training teachers, in particular curriculum design, materials and resources development,
          assessment and evaluation including the ability to meet deadlines in delivering programs
          efficiently, to a high standard of quality and within budget.

  4.      Experience and sound interpersonal skills in working with teachers of English in a range of
          professional and staff development activities.

  5.      Excellent people management skills and leadership abilities in working with a range of teaching
          and administrative support staff.

  6.      Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse range of tasks in line with changing priorities, and the
          ability to delegate tasks to support staff as appropriate.

  7.      Excellent cross -cultural communication skills and sensitivity to cultural values of adult students
          and teachers from a diverse range of national backgrounds.

          Desirable Attributes

  1.      A sound understanding of the regulatory and commercial context of ESL/EFL programs.

  2.      A sound understanding of the context of English language teaching in a range of countries.

  3.      Experience in promoting teacher professional development programs to teachers an d
          organisations within Australia and internationally.

  4.      Current IELTS examiner status.
