                      Letter from the Director
                                Ms. Lisa Napoli

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the Broad Run High School Band Program! I am the new
Band Director and I am so pleased to be working here at Broad Run! I am
looking forward to an extremely successful year and to working with every single
student.

This packet will provide all the information you will need about the
performance groups available at Broad Run. These groups are Symphonic
Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Lab, and Jazz Ensemble.
Also included in the packet is a calendar of events, my grading policy, rules and
regulations, expectations, rental agreements, concert attire, after-school
activities, and various important details. There is also a page for the student and
a parent to sign, acknowledging they read and understood this packet.

The music program is so valuable to our school and every student
involved gets so much out of it. Besides learning about the wonderful world of
music, the students will learn responsibility, dedication, how to multi-task,
respect, and most importantly, how to do all this and HAVE FUN at the same
time! We all work together as a unit to make this program thrive and I am very
much so looking forward to being a part of this “family”!

If there are any questions regarding this packet and anything else that
comes up during the year, please feel free to call me at school and email me at
school. I have a band website accessible from the Broad Run webpage. Go to
the “Staff” page and look for my name. Click on it and it will bring you straight to
my website. The URL is also below. PLEASE CHECK THE WEBSITE DAILY!
This is where students and parents will get updated on up-coming events or just
everyday news. Please put it in your favorites!!

I hope you are all as excited as I to start this year! Thank you all for being
a part of our “band family”! 

they will perform in their own concerts and along with Symphonic Band and Wind
Ensemble concerts. As a co-curricular ensemble, performances and rehearsals outside
regular school hours are a requirement.

Jazz Lab – This is a before/after school activity that will start when marching band

performance. The Jazz Lab is highly suggested for those who have hopes in being in

and can be before school or after school.

county events, and Virginia Music Educators Association events. As a co-curricular
ensemble, performances and rehearsals outside regular school hours are a requirement.
                                       GRADING POLICY
This will be the same grading policy for all performing groups .

10%: DAILY GRADE – Each rehearsal, every student will start off with a “100”. Deductions are
determined by Ms. Napoli per each offense. You will lose points for the following:

 Talking during or disrupting rehearsal – Do not talk when I am talking and when my
baton is up, no one speaks. The idea is to socialize by playing music, not by talking! I
will not waste your time in rehearsal so please don’t waste mine and everyone else
around you who are there to make music!
 Tardiness – Each class has a specific time when you have to be in your seats with
music/instrument, ready to go. If you are tardy, your daily grade will being with an “80”.
Remember, even if you were in the band room before the bell rang, you will be
considered tardy if you are not in your seat when I am ready to start!
 Gum/Food/Drinks – The only beverage allowed during rehearsal is water and it MUST
be in a closeable bottle. NO OPEN CONTAINERS! No Gum – Period. Food will be
allowed in the band room during non-rehearsal times but you MUST pick up after
yourself. The first time I have to pick up left over food and garbage, this privilege will be
taken away! And I mean it when I say the “first time”! I don’t enjoy having families of
mice and cockroaches sharing the band room with us.
 Being unprepared – This includes having no instrument, music, accessories
(mouthpiece, sticks, reeds, etc….). On the next page is a list of materials you must have
        for class.

30%: PLAYING/WRITTEN TESTS – This is my individual way of checking up on your progress.
For the playing tests, you will be tested on your improvement. The material you will need to know
will be told to you plenty of time in advance. The first playing test will be auditions and will be
            st nd
held the 1 or 2 week in September. Written exams will be on a need-only basis. They are to
test your basic (or advanced in the higher groups) knowledge of music.

40%: CONCERTS/PARTICIPATION/CALENDAR EVENTS – Every date on the calendar is
MANDATORY (unless I actually say it’s not) Please mark these dates in your calendars
today!! Concerts are you final exams. This is what you work so hard for over the year in class
and you have a chance to finally show it off to everyone! Make it your TOP priority to be at all the
concerts. Mark them in your calendars and make no plans. Excusable reasons for not attending
the concerts are: death in family, EXTREME illness, MAJOR emergencies. A paper cut, stuffy
nose, or a date are NOT valid reasons for missing a concert. If there is an emergency, I must be
notified in advance (unless the extreme circumstance doesn’t permit you to). If not, no matter
what the excuse is, your grade will be affected. Remember, you are VERY VALUABLE to the
program and without you there, you jeopardize everyone else including yourself! We are a team
and we need all players there! If by chance you do miss a concert, you must come to me to get
an alternate assignment of my choice to make up for it.

20%: PRACTICE SHEETS – This is how I will know you are practicing  Every two weeks you
will need to hand in your filled in, parent signed practice sheet. Depending on how many hours
you practice determine your grade. I must receive it on time every two weeks. If it is late, 5
points will be deducted every two days. Do not wait until the end of the quarter to hand in for all
the weeks and expect to get a perfect grade. Please make sure you hand them in on the due
dates! If you do not hand in a practice sheet at all, you will receive a failing grade for those
weeks.
                                        CONCERT ATTIRE
Concert attire is different for each group. Master Tuxedo takes care of our attire needs
and will come in to fit all the students! You are expected to buy or rent what you will need to wear

                                            PRIVATE LESSONS
While private lessons are not required, they are HIGHLY recommended for students in all
ensembles. Students who study privately are typically the first to make upper ensembles at
BRHS, as well as All-District and All-State bands. Private lessons will lead to very rapid
improvement, as well as a greater feeling of success. They can also teach a student
responsibility and give them a sense of pride in their playing. This is very good for our student
and our program! Please see Ms. Napoli for a list of approved private teachers.

                                     INSTRUMENT RENTAL
Students should provide their own instruments for rehearsal. We have a limited amount
of instruments to loan out. In the cases where student need to use a school instrument, there is
going to be an instrument fee. This will help us maintain the instruments in good playing
condition. This fee will be $100 for the year. Please do your part in keep this instruments in good
shape. You will not be allowed to rent school instruments if you mishandle them! If you have
been asked to change instruments by me or play a different instrument for marching band, you
will not be required to pay a fee. There is also a form you will need to fill out if you are
renting/borrowing an instrument from the school.
        All-District Band, All-District Jazz, All-State Band, Senior
Regional Orchestra, All-County Orchestra, and Solo and
        Ensemble

These are some of the advanced musical events offered in the state. It is a huge honor to make
any of these ensembles. They are all by audition. Studying privately and lots of hard practicing
highly increase your chances of being accepted into these groups. The experience you receive
playing in one of these groups is amazing and I encourage all to audition. Please note – there
will be some extra time needed for rehearsing and the concerts. You will miss some days of
school but are legal excuses recognized by the school.

                                 Materials for Classes

Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble: instrument (if you need to rent one,
please see the rental policy in the hand book), music, instrument accessories (reeds,
mouthpieces, valve oil, cork grease, etc..), pencil, metronome, and tuner. You may use student
account money to buy these things. Please see Ms. Napoli and she will order them for you.
Folders are given to you by the school. They are expensive black folders with the BRHS logo on
them. If you damage or lose it, you will be expected to replace it.
Percussion Ensemble: music, pencil, metronome, stick bag and sticks/mallets (there will
be a required purchase of equipment for the class that will include two kinds of snare sticks, 2
sets of mallets, a drum pad and a stick bag. The total cost for this will roughly be between $60-
$90, depending on what you need. We will take care of this when class starts. You also may use
student account money for this purchase.

                            Instrument Rooms/Cubbies

There are two instrument rooms in the band room. This is where you will be able to store your
instruments during the day. I also allow students to keep school books and personal items in the
room as well. The use of this room is a privilege, not a right. If you miss use the room, you
will not be allowed to store anything in them with exception of your instrument. The rules of these
rooms are located on the instrument room doors. Theft has happened! So be mindful of what
you keep in there. If you don’t want it stolen, don’t leave it in there! The storage room will
be open from 8am – 4pm. The doors will be locked before going outside or going into a different
room for a rehearsal. They will be opened back up after the rehearsal is over with. Please plan
accordingly to get your instruments and personal items out.

                         Fund-raising/Student Accounts
Fund raising is super important for our program. As you know, there is much equipment needed
to make a band program run and it is very expensive. Fund raising does not only just help the
extra curricular music activities – it also helps the in school classes too! By participating in the
fund raiser, you will all help the development and growth of the BRHS Band Program.
There are also student account fund raisers. This means that a portion of what each individual
student fund raises goes into a “student account”. They can use this money for any band related
expense (concert attire, marching band/indoor drum line/winter guard fees, paying for trips, music
accessories, etc…). They have these accounts for their entire four years at BRHS. Money not
used each year carries over to the next year. Any money not used by the end of their senior year
can go to a sibling coming into the program. You may even elect to give it to an under classmen.
If not, then the money goes back into the general account.
By signing this form, I fully understand and accept the rules
and regulations explained in this handbook.
