Distribution Trends
Horeca was hardest hit although all channels were negatively affected by the recession
Compared to other markets in Europe there is not the same culture of eating out in Slovak Republic. In the soft
drinks market there is thus a considerable bias towards retail sales. However, going out to eat and drink is on
the rise due to international influences. In 2009, on-premise was hit hard by the recession and sales declined
faster than off-premise.
The retail trade is still fragmented. Partly this is due to the geography of the country, but also to the lack of
know-how of local retailers and the lack of finance for investment. Since 2001, the Slovak retail market has
changed dramatically, due to the entry of international retailers. Apart from the already well-established retail
chains like Tesco, retailers such as Billa, Metro, Carrefour, Kaufland and Ahold have quickly expanded the
number of their stores across the country. In 2004 Lidl entered the market. In 2009, sales of the top ten retailers
declined for the first time after years of strong growth. The ten largest grocery retailers in terms of revenue saw
a combined year-on-year decline in sales of €321 m last year. In the first quarter of 2009, most grocery retailers
in the country saw sales revenues decline by as much as 25% compared to the same period in 2008.
