Distribution Trends

Consumers frequented hypermarkets less than before

Smaller retail outlets and local chains gained from the consumer change in purchasing habits and food
consumption patterns. Consumers are doing frequent trips to the store but spending less, and they are also
eating out less and cooking more at home.

In 2009 the government froze permits for new hypermarkets to foreign retailers to ensure the orderly
development of foreign hypermarkets. The move worked in favour of local players such as KK Supermart, NSK
and 99 Speedmart, which are mainly located within residential areas. Besides convenience, these outlets offer a
good selection of products that are competitively priced to hypermarkets. The shift in frequent trips to the store
is also benefitting these local players.

QSR and mainstream on-premise outlets continue to enjoy good sales. High-end restaurants however,
registered slower business as consumers reduced their visits to these outlets.

Major QSR players KFC and McDonald’s managed to sustain growth with meal deal promotions, increasing
drive-in and home delivery services. McDonald’s value meal promotion that started as a weekday feature is now
available seven days a week. KFC introduced a breakfast meal, new menu and extended operating hours. The
availability of free WIFI service in the on-premise outlets such as the mainstream mamak restaurants attracted
consumers, but sales were reportedly lower.


Market Valuation/Pricing

Pricing movement minimal as consumer tightening their purse strings

Even though most categories tried to refrain from increasing retail prices, taking into consideration the weaker
consumer purchasing power, overall soft drinks average prices increased by just over 4% in 2009. Players
invested resources to maintain competitive prices in order to protect brand shares across the modern retail
channel.

It was reported that consumers, especially those in middle to lower income groups, cannot afford to go to
different retail outlets to compare price so they switched brands based on pricing at th
