Distribution Trends

At home consumption is increasing

Soft drinks have traditionally been an on-premise ‘on the go’ industry, but with the availability of PET family
packs, there has been an increase in ‘at home’ consumption, particularly in categories such as carbonates, juice
and nectars. Still drinks remains to be the leading category in the on-premise channel.

Packaged water is essentially for ‘on the go’ consumption and bulk/HOD water has sizeable at home demand,
especially where the municipal water supply is not adequate for consumption.

Retail sales are serviced by national players through a network of offices spread across Indian states which
stock and deliver products to a number of distributors covering the territory assigned to them. In some areas,
such as Delhi and Hyderabad, there is a strong wholesaler presence. These wholesalers have no brand loyalty
but buy cheap and deliver to sub-distributors or retailers within the city or in interior areas.

The modern retail channel is important for some categories, such as juice, and more widespread in some cities
such as Hyderabad. Major players usually have a separate sales team for the modern retail channel.

Transport points, such as railway stations, bus stations and highways, lead on-premise sales. Bars catering to
low income groups, small eateries and road side kiosks are another important form of on-premise outlets for
cheap sachet water, carbonates and other soft drinks. In the unpackaged segment, many of the sales are from
street-corner vendors, sometimes operating out of a wheeled carriage. Star hotels, QSR outlets and top end
bars are priced higher and have limited volume share in the overall market, though they can be of importance in
some categories such as energy drinks and juice. Many
