Distribution Trends

Decline in on-premise as response to economic crisis

On-premise consumption is traditionally strong, as frequenting bars and restaurants is popular historically.
There are some 7,000 cafés and coffee bars, which are usually well populated all day long. In 2009 the
economic crisis first hit on-premise consumption, which contracted by 8%, ahead of the overall consumption
decline. Consumers became more careful with their money, cutting back on visits and expenditure. The decline
was even stronger in highly priced drinks, such as energy drinks and carbonated water. Carbonates are the
major category for on-premise consumption and declined by 7% in this channel.

On-premise consumption is well developed in traditional eating and drinking outlets, while vending operations
have been negligible. There are no international fast food restaurants, such as McDonalds, present in the
country.

Fragmented trade, dominated by traditional stores, but major retailers are growing

The retail structure in Bosnia-Herzegovina is very fragmented, as the share of major retail chains is still low.
Modern retail formats are only developing slowly. In the last decade the number of hypermarkets and larger
supermarkets has been growing fast although outlets with a selling area above 300 sqm still account for only
4% of all stores. On the other hand traditional and very small stores (below 40 sqm), run by individuals/
entrepreneurs make up more than half the outlets, but are gradually losing out against modern formats.

The major four retailers Konzum, Interex, Mercator and Bingo hold around one third of the market.
Unfortunately, the research of retail shares for leading retailers in Bosnia-Herzegovina is limited, not up to date
and only estimates are available. In the last couple of years there have been significant changes in rank among
leading retailers. Croatian based Konzum entered the market last among the major retailers. However, this
retailer expanded to hold the leading position in 2008 due to intense M&A activities in 2007 and new openings.
