          Knowledge of Research and Investigation in Science (Sample Asse ssment #7)

This sample assessment covers standards 1 d -e and demonstrates knowledge of research and
investigation in science. See www.nsta.org/ pres ervice for ex planations of the science standards. It is
important that science teachers experience the “doing” of science in aut hentic settings. As a result the
specific activities carried out in research can vary widely within a science and bet ween sc iences. This
could be a research project, a capstone project involving research or an independent study. In any
case, the experience should be carefully doc ument ed. The rubric below could be used to verify what
the fut ure science teachers have experienced.

                                          Scientific Investigation
Each candidate (or small group) should choose a topic of interest to researc h, collecting, analyzing and
interpreting data. The following parts should be included in the report of the research:
