1. Introduction to SIW Internationale Vrijwilligersprojekten

Who are we?
SIW is a non-governmental, non-profit voluntary service organization that was founded in
1953.

Our Objectives
-    stimulate the personal growth and development of young people;
-    encourage international contact and understanding;
- carry out social, cultural and environmental work.

Our Activities
These objectives are realized by the following activities:
- sending young people (16 to 35 years old) from the Netherlands to projects in
Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Africa
      and Asia;
- welcoming young people from the above mentioned areas in international
      volunteer projects in the Netherlands;
- organizing trainings for people of SIW and camp leaders.

The educational element is formed by:
- the organization of preparation and evaluation days/weekends for Dutch
participants in projects abroad. For participants of projects in Africa, Asia and
      Latin-America the preparation takes place in one weekend;
- the organization of thematic programs in the Dutch projects.

Our Organization
In the Netherlands, SIW is one of the largest organizations running projects and sending
volunteers abroad on this scale. The activities of SIW, based in the city Utrecht, are
organized by volunteers. SIW employs three persons for the administrative and financial
work concerning the exchange and the Dutch projects.
Each year, a general assembly decides on policies for the coming year. An executive
board is responsible for executing the assembly's decisions. Besides the board there is a
supporting group which exist out of two committees, the incoming and the outgoing
committee. Our 70 volunteers are divided into subgroups who each deal with a specific
area such as the Publicity Group, Asia Group and Dutch Projects Group. Each group has
various tasks, such as organizing the voluntary work camps in the Netherlands.

Our Sources of Income
SIW's income largely consists of contributions and subscription fees from the outgoing
project participants, and subsidies for projects in the Netherlands. These subsidies come
from different sources. The foundation does not receive any regular grants.

                                           5
2. Introduction to the SIW Projects

Each year, SIW organizes between 7 and 15 international voluntary projects in the
Netherlands. These projects last 2 weeks, and take place during the summer (from May
until September). The number of volunteers in a project varies from 8 to 20. English is
the spoken language in all of the work camps.

Work
As a rule, the volunteers work 30 hours a week, spread over 4 or 5 days.
We offer various types of work:
-      ENVI          environmental, gardening;
-      RENO          renovation or construction;
-      SOCI          social projects with refugees or homeless people;
- KIDS work with children or youth.

Thematic background programme
In some of the SIW projects the volunteers are engaged in a thematic background
programme. This programme is closely related to the actual work or to the aims and
activities of the partner organization for whom the work is carried out. The goal of the
thematic programs is to better understand the work the volunteers carry out.

Extra theme in 2009 camps
During this year’s work camps, the volunteers will get a workshop on the theme: what is
‘the’ Dutch identity? With the use of new media technology, like mobile phone pictures
and movies, the volunteers will describe what their view is on the Dutch culture, habits
and customs. Afterwards, internet sites, such as facebook and youtube, will be used to
spread the pictures and movies. Finally, the best participants will receive a Dutch prize.

Recreational program
Besides the work and a leisure program based on the project's theme, SIW also organizes
a recreational program. For both the theme and recreational program, there are ample
opportunities for ideas and initiatives from the volunteers themselves. Some of these
activities will be covered by the project budget.

Project leaders
SIW projects are organized in cooperation with the partner organization who supervises
the work. There are two SIW coordinators in each work camp: volunteers who carry out
all practical preparatory work and arrange daily matters during the project. They will be
living and working along with the participants, and are responsible for the entire
duration of the project.
The participants, the group of international volunteers, are also responsible for the
success of the project. Their tasks include organizing trips, buying food, cooking and
cleaning in shifts. They are expected to help in solving any occurring problems, to take
on an active attitude towards any of the activities, to show initiative and a sense of
responsibility towards the work, the theme, and above all towards each other.

Conditions for participation
The projects are accessible to volunteers between 18 and 30 years old (unless stated
differently). We try to avoid having more than two people from the same nationality in
one project. SIW is committed to providing opportunities for all people, also for

                                            6
volunteers with disabilities. We prefer to deal with each application individually to meet
different needs. Please contact us.

Bikes
In most cases the volunteers go to their work place by bike (like the rest of the Dutch). It
is easy to bike in the Netherlands due to its flat surface. And camp leaders or other
volunteers are often prepared to help you learn how to ride a bike.

Insurance
SIW provides all volunteers on SIW projects with the SCI-insurance, which covers for
accidents, illness and third party, only in case personal insurances don't cover the costs.
Volunteers expected to bring proof of their health/travel insurance if they have one.
Travel arrangements and theft of personal property are not covered. Therefore, all
participants are advised to make their own arrangements for this purpose.

No drugs in our work camps!
The fact that soft drugs are (almost) legal in The Netherlands is for some participants
an incentive to smoke drugs whenever they want. However, this has caused many
problems at work camps for the other participants, the camp leaders and the partner
organisation as well. Since 2000 we have adopted the rule for all our work camps that
during the whole work camp, it is strictly forbidden to use drugs. Participants who
decide to use drugs at any time during the work camp, will be sent away!!

Social work is interesting, but not always easy
Many of our work camps are in refugee centres or with homeless people. These kind of
work camps can be a very interesting experience. However, participants should realize
beforehand what it means for the kind of holiday they will have. Some people find the
atmosphere in this kind of institutions very sad and hopeless. It can be difficult to be
confronted with the uncertain future refugees or homeless people often have.
Participants should ask themselves beforehand whether they will be able to deal with
this and whether they want to participate in this type of work camps. A motivation
letter is required therefore (see below).

Motivation letter
We ask volunteers to write a motivation letter of about half a page long, in which they
can explain why they want to participate in a particular project, what kind of projects
they have participated in before or experiences that fit the project. SIW and partner
organizations for whom the work is done, really appreciate it if participants are
motivated. A motivation letter is always appreciated, but look for special notes in the
project descriptions for which projects we require a motivation letter (indicated by ML
in the overview list of the projects).

Info sheets
More detailed information about the project (info sheets) will be sent to the exchange
partners. Last minute participants will directly receive the info sheets by mail with a cc
to the organization.

Welcome letter
Volunteers will receive a letter from their camp leader. It is either sent with the info
sheet to the exchange partners or directly to the volunteer. Last minute participants will
directly receive the welcome letter by mail with a cc to the organization.

4. Detailed project information

Social projects
This year, SIW will host more social projects than last year. We experienced that the
interest in this category of projects is bigger than in environmental projects.
Moreover, some of our environmental partner organizations are facing the financial
crisis and therefore they decided to pause their activities. On the other hand, we are
very happy to offer more social projects this year.

Two of these projects, and maybe even a third will be added soon, will be hosted by
Emmaus. Emmaus is an international organization that give a place to stay for any
person who needs that, regardless their reasons. Emmaus promotes and supports
recycling by selling second hand articles. The persons who live in these communities
help in these shops as well and in this way they can be self providing. In the
Netherlands there are several of these communities and also world-widely there are
many Emmaus communities.

Another project will take place in a refugee centre. Refugees that are applying for
asylum in the Netherlands are given a place in a temporary stay. They stay there for a
short time until they are heard by the Dutch intelligent agency. After the hearing they
go to a refugee centre that helps the refugees with the orientation of their lives in a
new country. With the projects, SIW aims to help the children to have a playful and
happy period. A time when they can just be a child having fun. The work in these
locations can be hard. Not just because the program demands a lot of creativity and
organization, but moreover you will stay and live in an accommodation in the refugee
centre. A place where the atmosphere is sometimes a bit depressing. The children you
work with might just disappear because their parents were moved to an other centre.
Also, many refugees decide to leave the system and live as illegal immigrants
somewhere, often in poor conditions. On the other hand, working with refugee
children is very rewarding: you are one of the few sources of joy in their lives.

A new project will take place in cooperation with a playground location. The activities
here will be both social and construction. Playground organisations in the Netherlands
are also very depended on volunteers’ involvement in order to keep all the different
playground items in a proper way.

Our 2009 Social project are:

SIW 09 01 Playground Houten 04/07-18/07 KIDS/RENO 15vols
Work: Playground organizations have problems to maintain their playgrounds in the
Netherlands. They are not able to hire paid staff to maintain these locations for the
children in a proper way. The volunteers will therefore assist with the maintenance
and cleaning of the playground and the surroundings. They will also help in the shop
of the playground.
The local foundation, Enter, also organizes sport and games for the local children and
youth. With the use of a big American bus, the organization will visit the children on
various locations to offer sport activities over there. The volunteers will assist with
these social activities as well.
During the second week there will be a special two day activity (including sleeping in
tents) with the children. During these days, the children will play the games from all
                                           10
the countries of the participants. In the first week, the volunteers will promote the
second week activity as well. A festival evening will be organized too.
Accommodation: The volunteers will get a big room in the location of the playground.
They will need to bring their own mattress and sleeping bag. Cooking will be done
together.

Environmental/ renovation projects
Although the Netherlands has a high population density, there are still many beautiful
natural locations. There is a big need for organizations to maintain this natural
surroundings, otherwise these very unique landscapes which are so typical for the
Netherlands will disappear. As well as some unique plants, animals and ecosystems.

Dutch nature organizations therefore still help nature by maintaining some old uses.
Nowadays they do not get any profit from the work they do, but it helps to preserve
our cultural landscapes. In some areas however it is hard to get there with machines,
and things have to be done the same way our ancestors did them; by hand.

Dutch nature organizations cannot handle all this labor-intensive work. And some
unique natural areas would disappear if not hundreds of volunteers would yearly help
out with the maintaining of the Dutch cultural landscape. In the summer SIW groups
help out as well.

Our 2009 Environmental project is:

SIW 09 06 Oude Molen 15/08–29/08 ENVI 20 vols
Work: Drentsche Aa offers a various landscape of woods, heathland and meadows
together with old villages. It is a perfect area to walk through so you can see the various
landscapes. There is also a lot of water in the north of Drenthe. This part is called the
stroomdallenlandschap which you can reach by bike approximately 30 minutes from
Assen and Groningen.
The participants will do different activities like; cutting, dredging, pilling up the paths
and haymaking. The cooperation with the local partner has been taking place since
several years and they are always very supportive. The partner organization is always
willing to give some fun leisure time activities as well, like a guided tour to natural parcs
and historical places.
Accommodation: volunteers are expected to bring their own tents. Minimal sanitary
facilities: primitive
Location: Drentsche Aa, situated in the province of Drenthe.
Terminal: Assen, volunteers will be picked up in a old fashion way: with a tractor tram.

Again, this year SIW will organize some interesting projects with work that combines
environmental and renovation tasks. These projects have a nice variety of activities and
the two locations are very interesting! The first location is dealing ecological produced
vegetables and fruit. This is the second year that the partner organization hosts a
project and they were very content about last years results.

The second location, where there will be two workcamps this summer, is the biggest
horse riding foundation in the Netherlands. During the workcamps, the participants will
be active in different tasks and during both of the camps, a big event will be organized.

Our 2009 Environmental/renovation projects are:

SIW 09 02 Kraaybeekerhof 11/07–25/07 ENVI/RENO 15vols
Work: The group will work in a estate which is an oasis between a houses in a village
not to far from Utrecht in the center of the Netherlands. The estate is a legacy that is
owned and taken care of by 3 small ngo’s. Together they try to promote and support
environmental consigns and biological gardening. On the estate there are biological
gardens, a pond, a townhouse, some forest, a biological shop and an training center
for environmental organisations. The group will do work in all parts of the estate.
They will renovate a class room and make a location where they will make fruit
marmalade. This project will have a big variety in the programme and is a good
opportunity for volunteers with ‘green fingers’ who also like to do some construction
work!
Accommodation: The group will camp in tents, that they have to bring themselves,
on the estate. They can use the shop’s kitchen to cook some of the vegetables from
their own garden.
Location: a 10 minute walk from the railway station in the village Driebergen just

Wetland projects
Especially the impact of SIW projects on reed areas has been substantial. For years we
have been supporting wetland areas were a lot of work has to be done each year to
preserve these unique areas.

It’s not strange to have a lot of wetlands in a country that’s below sea level. In fact if
the dikes would break half of the Netherlands would be either sea or wetland. Birds
frequently use the wetlands in the Netherlands in fall and springtime. They come from
Siberia and northern Europe during their migration to warmer places in fall and to
cooler places to nest in spring. Most wetlands in the Netherlands consist of swampy
grasslands, reed areas and forelands (areas next to rivers). In the swampy grasslands
unique mosses and plant species grow.

Because the reed is no longer used on Dutch houses the wetlands slip full and would
eventually disappear if not cleaned. This has to be done the old-fashioned way; by
hand. Machines are too heavy for the soil and will get stuck.

The reed is gathered on boats and transported. Sometimes it is used for farms or
burned if transport in the area is too difficult.

Our 2009 Wetland projects are:

SIW 09 03 Weerribben 25/07–08/08 TEEN/ENVI 16 vols 16-18

Staatsbosbeheer, the National Forest Service. The reserve is the most important
swamp area of North Western Europe, and several stages in the development from
open water to swamp forest can be seen in this vulnerable area. It is a typical Dutch
area with lots of water and fields. To preserve this the participants will make hay in
the wetlands. The volunteers will get some other work on two days as well. We
continue to host teenagers on this camp, after the good experience of last year. The
accommodation is perfect to play sports, swim or organize activities.

**TO BE CONFIRMED BY NATIONAL AGENCY**
Work: ‘Voluntary work Campaign the Netherlands’ is a youth exchange with 25
participants from the Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, United Kingdom and Germany. All
the promoters are active in the field of (international) voluntary services and they
would like to give young people the opportunity to experience more about this. This
multilateral youth exchange will take place for 16 days in the beginning of August in
The Netherlands. The general aim is to raise awareness on voluntary services among
young European citizens. Through active participation and non-formal working
methods, such as assignments, workshops, art & creativity and some field visits of
good practise, the participants will understand the importance of voluntary service,
how important and nice it is for yourself and your surroundings, which aspects are part
of it and why others do voluntary work. The participants will join in a photo contest,
an advertisement campaign, a theatre play and more. During the Advance Planning
Visit on 12-14 June, the promoters and young participants can discuss about some
practical things, about the program, how to prepare and how to organise the
dissemination afterwards.
Accommodation: Volunteers will sleep at a youth center and they will bring their own
sleeping bags and mattress.
Location: To be confirmed
Terminal: To be confirmed
Special notes: This project is a cooperation with Elix, Genctur, NIG and UNA Exchange
