The Asphalt Zipper is the fastest and most economical way to open trench or road repair in as phalt wit h
cost and time savings of well over 70%. It eliminates asphalt saw cutting, chunking and disposal with the
most powerful asphalt cutters available. The Asphalt Zipper® recycles the pulverized asphalt with a
predetermined portion of the underlying base material, usually 1 to 3 inches, producing a stabilized base
material—all in one easy step. There are three traditional methods of improving or stabilizing the bas e
that are used in conjunction wit h full -depth reclamation/recycling (FDR). All three methods are suitable for
use with the Asphalt Zipper®. These met hods include: Mechanical, Chemical, and Bituminous.

Today’s chip seal is not your grandfather’s chip seal. Technological
advancements in equipment and materials have significantly reduced the problems associated wit h chip
seals of the past. Computerized application equipment, polymer modified binders, clean, durable
aggregates, use of flush coats and enhanced construction techni ques have greatly improved the reliability
of modern chip seals. Today’s modern chip seal can be reliably placed on a wider variety of pavements
under a wider variety of conditions. Chip seal, the best value for your maint enance dollar.

FHWA is charged with the broad responsibility of ensuring that America’s roads and highways continue to
be the safest and most technologically up-to-date. Although State, local, and tribal governments own
most of the Nation’s highways, we provide financial and technical support to them for constructing,
improving, and pres erving America’s highway system.
FHWA supports pavement pres ervation principles. E ven though the philosophy of pa vement preservation
has shown wide acceptance, there are still many challenges to be overc ome before pavement
preservation becomes standard practice. Rigorous attention to using preventive maintenance treatments
on the right roads at the right time can save substantial rebuilding costs on roads which otherwise
deteriorate too far to patch up and must be rebuilt from scratch, as well as vastly improve the overall ride
quality and smoothness of roads for the driving public.
