Title 04/02/09
Background on IUID
• The General Accounting Office (GAO) Findings:
a. Federal government lacks reliable accounting for inventory, property, and
equipment.
• These problems with visibility and accountability are a major
impediment to the federal government.
• Lack of reliable Information impairs the government’s ability to:
a. Know the quantity, location, condition, and value of assets it owns.
b. Safeguard its assets from physical deterioration, theft, loss,
mismanagement.
c. Prevent unnecessary storage and maintenance costs or purchase of assets
already on hand.
d. Determine the full costs of government programs that use the assets.
• Congress, managers of federal agencies, and other decision
makers are not receiving accurate information for programs
involving inventory, and operational readiness.
4
Title 04/02/09
DoD Vision for IUID
• To implement a policy establishing a strategic
imperative for uniquely identifying tangible items
relying to the maximum extent practical on
international standards and commercial item
markings and while not imposing unique government
data requirements.
• Uniquely identified (UID) tangible items will
facilitate item tracking in DoD business systems
and provide reliable and accurate data for
management, financial, accountability and asset
management purposes.
5
Title 04/02/09
DoD Top 10 IUID Priorities
1. To establish the IUID master data in SAP.
2. To capture IUID item data when all materials enter the inventory
through various business processes, i.e. receipts.
3. To process all material leaving the inventory.
4. To record the use of IUID materials in maintenance work.
5. Movements (transfers) inside the inventory of SAP.
6. Processing “physical inventory” in both Inventory Management and
Logistics Execution modules.
7. Enable the Quality Management inspection process.
8. To enable IUID reporting and display of IUID information.
9. To provide item configuration management report capability for
major items and assemblies in a work breakdown structure having
the IUID for each.
10. To provide aggregate life-cycle cost by major end item IUID.
