California Code

Anything with 16 or more cylinders manufactured before 1965, or anything
manufactured before or in 1922, is considered a horseless carriage. You can apply for
                                                Horseless Carriage plates.

Vehicles manufactured after 1922 that are at least 25 years old are considered historic
vehicles and are eligible for Historical Vehicle plates. These vehicles must be of historic
interest, meaning that they are collectible and are used for exhibitions and car club
                                                meetings.

Antique Motorcycle plates are also available for motorcycles manufactured in or before
                                                1942.

Use the Special License Plates form to apply for all of the above plates. The fee is $25,
and as these special plates require extra documentation, they cannot be ordered online.

The plates don't expire and remain with the vehicle if it changes ownership.

it did when it was manufactured. Vehicles that are exact replicas of the original model are also
Illinois Compiled Statutes acceptable. The vehicle must be as safe to drive as it was originally.

When these plates are on the vehicle, you may only drive to and from antique exhibitions and
demonstrations, or to obtain repair work. If you have the vehicle's original model-year plates, you
may display them as long as the antique plates and registration are inside the vehicle.

The state offers a helpful brochure containing detailed information on antique plates.

Indiana To qualify for an antique plate, a vehicle must be at least 25 years old and be mechanically sound
enough to pass a safety inspection conducted by an Indiana State Police Department officer.
Indiana Code

Additionally, the vehicle's motor must be similar to the original motor. The vehicle must be titled
in your name, and you must have the title with you at the time of the inspection. If the title isn't
available, complete a title application and obtain the title beforehand.

To apply for the plates, bring the completed inspection affidavit to a license branch.

The plates don't carry any special charges. You'll only need to pay the usual registration fees and
taxes. The plates need to be renewed every 12 months.

                                     Year-of-Manufacture Plates

If your vehicle qualifies as an antique vehicle, you may apply to use the Indiana plates issued in
the year the vehicle was manufactured.

While you don't need to have both the front and rear plates, the plate(s) must be unaltered, in
good condition, and be able to pass an inspection at a license branch. Also, if your vehicle hasn't
already passed the safety inspection, it will need to do so.

Apply for the plates at any license branch by bringing the inspection certificate and the original
plate(s). It costs $48 to use the plates, plus the regular registration fees and taxes. The plates
need to be renewed every 12 months.

You'll be issued historic plates. Keep those plates, your registration, and the inspection affidavit

Antique plates are for vehicles that are at least 25 years old. The engine must either be
manufactured at the same time as the vehicle, or built in accordance with the original
engine's specifications. Additionally, the vehicle cannot be altered or reconstructed, and
                                             cannot be for routine use.

Custom plates are for vehicles that were built after 1948, but are at least 30 years old.
Replicas built to resemble such a vehicle also fall into this category. The vehicle must
have been changed from the original design or construction.

Horseless carriage plates are for vehicles manufactured before 1916. The engine must
either be manufactured at the same time as the vehicle, or be built in accordance with
the original engine's specifications. The vehicle cannot be for routine use.

Street rod plates are meant for vehicles built before 1949 that have been altered, or for
                                             replicas of such vehicles.

                                    Antique Historic Plates

You may register your vehicle's license plate as a historical plate provided it is over 25 years old,
the year of issuance is consistent with the model year, and it does not clash with the state's
current numbering system. To apply, follow the exact steps listed above and include a photo of
                                    your plate.

Montana Better known as "Vintage" and "Pioneer" plates, these are available only for vehicles more than

                                    Original Montana Plates

Original plates aren't "nostalgically" remanufactured by the state. They are preexisting and are
intended to match the same year a motor vehicle rolled off the assembly line. For example, a
1966 Ford Mustang would sport Montana plates as they looked in 1966. To display these plates
your car must be more than 25 years old and be used for everyday travel. If you meet these
qualifications, you then must complete the lower section of the Application to Display Original
Montana License Plates and have a law enforcement official fill the top half.

Once you complete the application, you then must register the vehicle in your name, pay a one-
time $25 license fee, and submit everything to the Title and Registration Bureau. Bear in mind
that you must have both existing plates in order to use. You cannot drive with only plate.

In order to apply for this plate, you will need to own an ancient car, truck, or motorcycle―at least
35 years old. You may have bought it, built it, or just restored it to mint condition, and if you

After that you will only need to renew every five years for a fee of $5. You are not allowed to use

Instead of antique plates, New Mexico has horseless carriage plates (see above) and year-of-

Only vehicles 30 years or older are allowed to display a year-of-manufacture plate provided:

The plate is authentic and New Mexico-issued
The plate number has not already been assigned

                                                      US Antique Plate Summary
Antique plates are for vehicles manufactured in 1954 or before. The vehicle must be
maintained as a collector's item, and may only be used for antique exhibitions, parades,
                                            and related activities.

Special interest plates are for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and maintained as
a collector's item. This designation also applies to vehicles or replicas that qualify as
"street rod" vehicles, as well as manufacture dates before 1949. Lastly, this category
works for vehicles classified as "special interest" by an established antique vehicle
                                            organization.

To apply for either type of plate, complete the appropriate form and submit it to a DMV office.
Both antique and special interest vehicles require only one plate to be displayed, so only one plate
will be issued. The plate costs $3 in conjunction with a new registration, or $5 if you're changing
                                  or replacing a current plate.

Pennsylvania PennDOT offers three types of special plates for older vehicles:

Antique plates are for vehicles more than 25 years old that are in a condition similar to
the original specifications, either through maintenance or restoration. Replicas are not
                                            permitted.

Classic plates are for vehicles at least 15 years old that are in a condition similar to the
original specifications, either through maintenance or restoration. Replicas are not
                                            permitted.

Collectible plates are for reconstructed vehicles that have undergone significant
alterations to the original specifications, but have still been maintained in a collectible
                                            condition.

To qualify for any of these plates, the vehicle must be primarily used for antique
exhibitions, parades, and related activities. The vehicle may be driven one day a week
                                            for routine transportation use.

The plates cost $75, and there's also a $22.50 certificate of title fee. These are one-
time fees, as the plates are permanent and remain valid for the life of the vehicle,
provided there's no change in ownership.

No matter which plate you request, you must complete the antique/classic plate
application. The rest of the application procedure varies according to the type of plate,
but specific instructions are clearly provided on the form.

                                  To apply, you must submit:

The plate must stay with the vehicle, and cannot be used for other vehicles.
