Scotland’s leading track and field athlete Lee McConnell today unveiled plans for the first
major sporting event to be held at the new Scotstoun Stadium and called on sporting
fans to be part of it. The newest, most exciting concept in athletics, Super8, is coming to
Glasgow, along with some of the top names in the sport to mark the start of world class
sporting action at the venue.

McConnell will captain the Glasgow Super8 team, as they go head to head against
seven other British cities over two hours of top class athletics at Super8 Scotland on
Wednesday 7th July. She was joined at today’s launch by the Deputy Leader of Glasgow
City Council and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games Councillor Archie
Graham and pupils from Scotstoun Primary School.

The former Holyrood Secondary School pupil who usually competes in the 400m and is
the first Scottish athlete to gain World, European and Commonwealth medals, will test
her speed work over 200m in preparation for the European Championships this summer.

Speaking as she announced ticket details for the event McConnell said: “It is brilliant to
be part of Super8 2010, and I am so proud to be team captain for Glasgow. Leading the
team in front of Glasgow supporters will be a very special evening and I am aiming to
lead by example by taking maximum points over the 200m.

“Stepping down in distance just three weeks out from the European Championships will
be great preparation, and it will be magical to perform as captain at the centrepiece of
the opening of Scotstoun Stadium.

“It is also great to be able to welcome athletes from overseas here to my home stadium.I
want them to know just how fantastic Scottish sports fans can be and 5000 of them
cheering us on will give us a great home advantage, so whatever your sport come down
to our great new stadium and be part of it.”
The unique Super8 format pitches eight cities head to head in a two-hour schedule of
spectator-friendly competition. McConnell and her Glasgow team will do battle with
Gateshead, Plymouth, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, London and Cardiff for the
crown of 2010 Super8 champions. The event is being delivered in partnership with
Culture and Sport Glasgow.

Super8 will consist of 100m, 110m hurdles, 400m, 800m, 1500m, pole vault, high jump,
long jump, javelin, shot and medley relays (200,200,400,600). Teams can feature two
overseas athletes and may play an 'ace' in order to obtain double points from their
strongest event. Top athletes already confirmed for the competition include current
World 800m bronze medallist Jenny Meadows, and Olympic 400m hurdles bronze
medallist Tasha Danvers.

Glasgow captain McConnell is hoping to lead the city to a memorable victory at the
opening of the new Scotstoun Stadium following its £18million redevelopment. Super8
will be the first major athletics event to be staged at the new facility and will be at the
heart of the opening celebrations on Wednesday 7 July.

Scotstoun Stadium was officially opened by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal on

And with only 5,000 tickets available Councillor Archie Graham is calling on the local
community to be a part of history at the opening celebrations.

Scotstoun Stadium and I am sure that athletics fans and the general public will turn out
in large numbers to roar Lee McConnell and our Glasgow team onto success on the

“Given that it is the first major sporting event to be staged at the new stadium it will truly
be a historic occasion. The local community has supported athletics throughout the
years and I am sure that this event will be no different. It is a real opportunity to come
along and be a part of history.

“Athletics will of course play a huge part in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and events
such as Super8 will heighten the anticipation for the Games. It will provide us with a real
opportunity to again show that Glasgow is a city with a proven track record of hosting
events of the very highest quality.”
